If you have chosen to pursue the study of chemistry in secondary or postsecondary school you are not alone. Chemistry is one of the most popular areas of learning for Canadian students for a variety of great reasons. First of all, chemistry is a fascinating, hands on area of study. Students explore and experiment with different substances and elements in the lab, innovate new materials, and test hypotheses. From creating skincare to enhancing motor oil or developing medicines and vaccines, the practical value of chemistry knowledge is boundless. Another reason people love to study chemistry is the range of career opportunities that come with a chemistry background. You can pursue careers in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, nutrition, engineering, technology, environmental studies, manufacturing and so much more. Chemistry touches so many different disciplines and industries.

Students that have chosen Montreal as their place of study will be happy to learn they are in one of the top places to live and study. Montreal is a cosmopolitan city with European flair, thanks to its roots in French and Quebecois culture. Hike Mont Royal, take the short drive up to Mont Tremblant for skiing or hiking, or do a mini trip to the gorgeous Charlevoix area near Quebec City. Whatever you are into, you will certainly find it in Montreal.

Chemistry students that choose to continue living in Montreal will find plenty of opportunities as the city is known as being a hub for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Some large Montreal companies include Novartis, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi, and Johnson and Johnson.

What is the Study of Chemistry?

Chemists are problem solvers and researchers that always seek to innovate materials and the world around them. They engage in inquiries about how they can make a product or material better, how to create new forms of energy, and even how they might make food more nutritious or safe. Chemistry is known as a central science and is connected with other science subjects, like biology, mathematics and physics. Much learning in chemistry is focused on problem solving, experimentation, and learning theory. As a chemistry student, you will also learn how to design research projects, collect and record observations and data, and other key professional skills.

You may chose to focus exclusively on chemistry, or combine the study of chemistry with other subjects when you get to university. For example, you might double major in chemistry and biology, or chemistry and physics. Some programs like nursing, nutrition or engineering may require you to have foundational chemistry credits to graduate. But to get into a postsecondary program, you will need to take the right high school credits.

What is 9th Grade Chemistry Like?

Grade 9 chemistry is typically studied as part of a general science program. Chemistry will be studied alongside other areas of learning, such as biology, safety, and even science in society. With a general course in science as your background, you can determine whether or not chemistry is the right area of study for you.

Once you get into the older grades, you can choose a chemistry focused credit or if you are in Quebec, take chemistry as a CEGEP course. In the upper grades and CEGEP, you may have a choice between academic or more applied streams of study, depending on whether or not you want to pursue learning in university. Those that choose a more academic stream will find learning more focused on abstract and theoretical concepts, while applied students may learn chemistry in a more practical way.

Choosing a college or university course pathway can be tricky as there are so many factors to consider. Do your long term goals require a university degree? Do you have financial constraints that could get in the way of your completing additional years of study, if needed? Do you want a long postsecondary experience, or are you looking to get into the workplace right away?

If you are not sure about your long term goals, find a mentor, guidance counsellor or teacher that can help you figure out what you may want. While it can feel daunting to think about your adult life while in secondary school, a lot of thought and planning can save you time and money in the long term.

Should I Worry About Paying for Chemistry A Level Tuition?

If you are studying in Canada, you will not need to take Chemistry A Levels to enter a university or college program. A Levels are typically associated with schools in the United Kingdom. In provinces outside of Quebec, the main academic preparation happens in secondary school, where you will receive high school credits that are considered in your entry into university.

Quebec students have to take CEGEP courses, which is essentially a college level program where you acquire credits for university. CEGEP stands for Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel, in other words, a general and vocational college. Essentially, CEGEP provides an extra step between secondary school and university, and represents a the first level of higher education. Most students start CEGEP at the age of 17. Quebec residents do not have to pay for CEGEP, as the costs are covered by public funds.

Toronto remains a top choice for international students and locals who prefer the amenities of an urban metropolis with multiple universities and lots of multicultural flair.

Is Chem Tutoring Worth it in University?

Absolutely - chemistry tutoring is particularly critical for anyone who wants to get university grades that will result in a successful application to graduate or postgraduate professional programs. For many people, an undergraduate degree is still an early step toward achieving a long term career goal. Aspiring doctors will need to complete an additional program on top of an undergraduate degree; the same goes for MBA students, and Masters and PhD candidates.

Many graduate programs will consider your Grade Point Average in university before admitting you to their programs. Having a tutor will mean having someone who knows the subject matter well to provide feedback on your work, help you prepare for a big exam, and perhaps even support you or provide insight on how to write a successful application letter.

A university level tutor may cost more than one who can tutor you at the high school level because they will need to be much more qualified and experienced to give you the help you need. We suggest that you choose the right tutor carefully, and ask questions about their academic training so you can be confident that they are in a position to give you the best possible level of help.
