Studying to Become a Latin Teacher in Canada

We've touched on this a little above for how to study to become a Latin teacher, but depending on how you want to teach Latin it's going to look different. Being a Latin teacher in school you're going to need a bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree is the bare minimum for being a teacher in Canada. Most Latin teachers will take there bachelor's in a Latin-centred program. Latin programs can be multiple departments at the university. It could be in History or Classical or under other departments. Speak to your university to find the best path for your Latin Studies.

Becoming a Latin tutor you need a lot fewer education requirements but the guidelines to become a tutor are a lot lower. But you also need to consider your clients. They're going to want you to a reputable tutor. The more education or experience you have the better you'll look for clients to hire you. You want to be able to prove to them you can teach. Whether you want to work as a tutor or teach in school you're going to have an understanding of the Latin language. Your university program will help you learn Latin, but it'll be a lot easier already having an understanding of Latin. How to Teach Latin in School?

Deciding to teach Latin in schools is a great choice. It means you’ll have so many wonderful teaching opportunities you’ll get to explore. You’ll have the choice of teaching grade school, high school, college or university. Latin is going to be taught as a second language course in grade school and high school so you’ll also have the option to pursue another subject as well. Teaching Latin at the college or university level you’ll be teaching students that want to pursue a career in Latin. Either way, you’ll be a big part in there life teaching them Latin.

Latin teachers will also have the chance to travel. You can take overseas with your Latin abilities. It’s amazing how far you can reach with a teaching background in Latin. Latin teachers have a lot of stability in their job with a steady paycheque. You're also going to have set hours and be able to work with a variety of students. It truly is rewarding working as a Latin teacher.

Becoming a Latin teacher will take some time, but it’s a very small time frame. Depending on your province's requirement you could be teaching Latin in as little as 4 years. In 4 years you’ll have a great job, great pay and a great atmosphere for the next 30 or 40 years. 4 years is a small price to pay. Why does it take 4 years to become a Latin teacher? Well, the bare minimum requirement for becoming a teacher is a bachelor's degree. This atlas means you going to be in the classroom for 4 years before your able to work as one. If you look at Ontario, you're also going to be expected to go to teachers college which is another 2 years. This is why you need to look at the requirements of your province.

You can study Latin as you continue to go through your bachelor's degree. This way by the time your finished school you’ll also be fluent in Latin.

How to Teach Latin as a Tutor?

Tutoring as a Latin tutor has lots of benefits. For starters, you’ll have a lot more freedom and flexibility in your schedule. Tutors can pick their hours. Most tutors should be available for after-school hours but you can still make your schedule as you want. Latin tutors also have flexibility with there teaching methods. They don't have to follow a structured pathway for the rest of the year. They can mix up there learning styles to better suit the needs of there students. Being a Latin tutor doesn’t necessarily require you to have any formal education, you’ll just need to be able to be fluent in Latin.
