South Korea's identity was not built in a day. It's a country that has rebuilt itself many times, through language, territory and ideas. Now, the world has its eyes on the nation thanks to its entertainment industry, which has opened the door to an immense cultural heritage, but the people who shaped that identity were rarely just entertainers. Many were also monarchs, military leaders, scholars, and activists who defined what it meant to be Korean in their own time.

The country's identity pulls back more than two thousand years, through the Three Kingdoms, the Silla and Joseon dynasties, Japanese colonial rule, war, and division, before the globally connected Korean democracy and entertainment powerhouse we know today.

Starting with the Hangul alphabet, created under King Sejong, the foundation of a distinct Korean identity is marked by its royal palaces, tombs, and cultural heritage sites, which they've preserved as living reminders of the dynasties that shaped the peninsula.

Two South Korean flags,
Koreans want their celebrities to be aboveboard throughout their career.

Military figures such as Admiral Yi Sun-sin and independence activists like Yu Gwan-sun occupy places as symbols invoked whenever Koreans discuss resilience. In the modern era, the same instinct to look toward exceptional individuals extends to sports, cinema, and music, where global icons like Son Heung-min, Bong Joon-ho, and BTS now carry Korea's name onto stages the historical figures below could never have imagined.

Korea: Power beyond the stardom

Unlike US Forbes, Forbes Korea ranks celebrities not only by wealth; the Koreans' approach to their star system values their professional achievements, social media presence, TV exposure, and charity work, since they also value what adds to South Korea's good reputation. Since 2017, BTS has been in the top places of the Power Celebrity 40, sharing it with other super K-pop stars, Black Pink, singers Jang Min-ho, Lee Chan-won, and Lee Seung-gi, plus baseball player Ryu Hyun-jin and footballer Son Heung-min.

Do you have a few heartthrobs, Korean actors and singers you know but not their names? We have a few favs to talk about, too. Do you know these famous people from South Korea? Is your best oppa or nuna on our list?

Historical Figures Who Defined Korea

From a 15th-century king who gave his people an alphabet to a K-pop band that moves billions of dollars a year, South Korea's story of constant reinvention marvels the world. Here are some of the figures between monarchs, warriors, activists, and entertainers who each left a permanent mark on the country's identity.

Sejong the Great
Role in Korean Society:

Monarch and a pivotal figure in cultural development; lived 1397–1450.

Main achievements:
  • He personally guided the creation of Hangul, Korea's native script promulgated in 1446 through the Hunminjeongeum. He created it so ordinary Koreans (who previously relied on Chinese characters) could read and write in their own language.
  • His legacy is honoured every October 9 on Hangeul Day, and Seoul's central plaza bears his name and statue today.
Yi Sun-sin, the greatest naval hero
Role in Korean Society:

Admiral considered the greatest naval hero (lived from 1545–1598)

Main achievements:
  • Remembered for his campaigns during the Imjin War (1592–1598), when Japan attempted to conquer the Korean peninsula, and his victory in the Battle of Myeongnyang, where a fleet of just 12 Korean ships defeated some 133 Japanese vessels in a narrow strait.
  • His wartime diary is now part of UNESCO's Memory of the World.
Shin Saimdang
Role in Korean Society:

Artist and Calligrapher. She lived from 1504–1551 and is considered a symbol of Confucian ideals.

Main achievements:
  • A painter, poet, and calligrapher of the Joseon era, mother of the influential Confucian scholar Yi I (Yulgok).
  • She became a lasting symbol and the first woman to appear on a Korean banknote, featured on the 50,000-won bill.

Contemporary Icons: Most famous Koreans in the world

Korea’s artistic sphere has taken the world by storm. Its cinema industry has won awards at major festivals while breaking several records at the global box office, as have its music and TV icons, proving that this is not a phenomenon; Korean culture is here to be appreciated permanently.

South Korea's celebrities are complete artists: it's quite common for an entertainer to sing, dance, act, model and present on television; from Lee Seung-gi to Kim Tae-hyung, better known as V from BTS or veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung, with her five-decades-long career and an impressive list of awards to her name (including an Oscar), her inclusion in the 2021 Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World and recent TV hit, Beef.

BTS: A Global K-Pop Sensation

The biggest boy band globally today has achieved unprecedented success, influencing international music trends. Formed in 2013 by Big Hit Entertainment, BTS was intended to be a hip-hop group. Their international expansion, thanks to collaborations with singers from Coldplay, Halsey, and Snoop Dogg and hits like Dynamite, made them the first Korean Pop act to be nominated for a Grammy.

After a 4-year hiatus and completing mandatory military service in 2025, the full group returned to the top of Forbes Korea's Power Celebrity 40 list in 2026, livestreaming on Netflix tehir comeback concert with ana audience of 18 million people; they also earned the 1st spot on the Billboard 200 for a record seventh time with the reunion album, 'Arirang', titled in honour of one of Korea's most famous folk songs of pride.

The BTS effect

BTS is so famous that it became a measurable slice of South Korea's GDP. The Hyundai Research Institute has estimated the group's annual economic contribution at several billion dollars, factoring in tourism, exports, and consumer spending tied to the "BTS effect". The "Big Four" K-pop agencies, HYBE, SM, JYP, and YG made a combined revenue north of 4 trillion won (roughly $3 billion) in 2023 alone, with HYBE (BTS agency) remaining the industry's largest player.

Bong Joon-ho: Acclaimed Film Director

Korea's cinema industry has bloomed in the past decades, and "Parasite" showcases Korean cinema's global impact. Director Bong Joon-ho rewrote cinema history in 2019 and 2020:

At the Oscars 2020, Parasite became the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture, adding wins for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature with four Academy Awards in total.
The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2019
Parasite made a global box office of more than 250 million dollars.

Son Heung-min: Football Star

In recent years, Korean soccer players have brought great honour to Asian soccer by playing for the top clubs in European leagues, such as PSG, Atlético Madrid, and Tottenham, to name just a few. It was Son Heung-min, once captain of Tottenham Hotspur and Premier League Golden Boot winner, who paved the way.

With 173 goals, Son captained Tottenham Hotspur to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League, before making a record-breaking move to Los Angeles FC in August 2025 for a reported $26.5 million, one of the most expensive incoming transfers in MLS history. He remained as captain of the South Korean national team for the FIFA 2026 World Cup.

Influential Women in Korean History

Queen Seondeok (c. 595–647): Silla Dynasty Ruler

Korea's first reigning queen, known for her political acumen and cultural patronage, ascended the Silla throne in 632. During her 15-year reign, she expanded Buddhist institutions. She commissioned Cheomseongdae, an astronomical observatory in Gyeongju recognized today as one of the oldest surviving observatories and protected as South Korea's National Treasure No. 31.

Yu Gwan-sun (1902–1920): Independence Activist

The leading figure in the 1919 March 1st Movement against Japanese colonial rule, Yu Gwan-sun was just a teenage student when she helped organize peaceful protests. In her hometown of Cheonan, she organized a demonstration at the Aunae Market, where her parents were killed, and she was arrested. She died in prison in 1920 at just 17 after enduring torture, and is remembered as one of Korea's most enduring symbols of resistance.

Pioneers in Korean Entertainment

The Kim Sisters: Trailblazing Musicians

Before the global K-pop expansion, the first ambassadors of Korean entertainment arrived during the 60's. North America fell in love with Korean pop stars for the first time with the appearance of the Kim Sisters, Sue and Ai-ja Kim and their cousin Mia, who became the first Korean act to crack the Billboard Hot 100, the first ones to record music in the United States, and appear on The Ed Sullivan Show 22 times! One of their biggest hits was "Charlie Brown".

Ahn Sung-ki: Veteran Actor

Known as "The Nation's Actor," and a defining presence in modern Korean cinema. With a career spanning over 6 decades, built a filmography of roughly 140 films, beginning as a child star in 1957's Twilight Train. Some of his most well-known films are A Fine, Windy Day and Radio Star. Ahn passed away in early 2026, at age 74.

Top Korean Male and Female Actors

The South Korean entertainment machine is proud of its cohort of veteran actors, both male and female. Earlier, we mentioned Youn Yuh-jung; she is in a league with several others of her calibre, a short-list that will give you a general idea of the real talents on the peninsula:

Park Hyung-sik
With decades in the entertainment business, he is one of the stars of a popular series set in the Three Kingdoms period. Park dabbles in everything from musical theatre to music production. He got his start as a member of the boy band ZE: A, but soon branched into acting.
Kim Hye-ya
The Korean ageing system matters not to Kim Hye-ya. She began her acting career in 1963 and shows no sign of slowing down. Her latest star-studded offering, the 2022 series Our Blues, showcases her phenomenal talent. But if you really want to see her tour de force performance, check out The Light In Your Eyes.
Park Seo-joon
Also a television and film celebrity, he was once crowned the king of romantic comedy but has lately lost that title to his friend, Choi Woo-shik (known from the Korean films Parasite and Train to Busan).

South Korea's list of talents could be endless. You'd never confuse Park Bo-young with anyone because this diminutive powerhouse actor's list of film and television credits rivals her charity works. Most recently, she donated over £1 9500 to the Türkiye-Syria disaster relief fund. She's by no means the only generous Korean celebrity. Actress and singer IU (Lee Ji-eun) has donated well over two million pounds to various causes throughout her career.

Three people in a cozy room, two seated studying with books, a third standing offering fruit on a plate.

Should you put Our Blues on your watchlist, you'll get to see Lee Jung-eun, who played the desperate housekeeper in Parasite, in a completely new light. You'll also see Han Ji-min, who played Kin Hye-ya's younger self in Light. But don't get Han Ji-min confused with Hwang Jung-eum. They're equally talented and look enough alike to be sisters.

Again pressed for time, we can mention Han So-hee, Jun Ji-hyun - one of South Korea's highest-paid actresses- and Bae Suzy only in passing. Suzy is one of the most in-demand actresses in Korean entertainment. And, of course, the luminous Son Ye-jin, who recently wed handsome Korean actor Hyun Bin. They fell in love while filming Crash Landing on You, a must-watch series about love across the demilitarized zone.

The unstoppable Korean Cinema

After the Parasite phenomenon, it is now the turn of the historical film drama, The King's Warden, which in 2026 became the highest-grossing film in South Korean box office history, with a cumulative gross above $95 million as of late March 2026.

Korean Celebrities with controversial careers

The Korean Star system has had its villains, no matter the star power these stars carried. Whether solo singer or group, actor or actress, South Korean culture insists its representatives remain scandal-free. Any hint of disgrace will see stars discredited and reviled across every social media platform; some of the biggest cases of careers that declined after "failing" this system are:

Actor Ji Soo was accused of school bullying. The Strong Girl Bong Soon actor was immediately pulled from the project he was then working on. He's not acted since, perhaps only partly because of his mandatory military service.
Actress Seo Ye-ji had a spot of trouble over Kim Jung-hyun. The social media uproar caused her to withdraw from the project she was then on, too. Her image has somewhat been rehabilitated, though. She's now back at work.
Ahn Jae-hyun and Koo Hye-sun. Even a messy divorce can be enough to banish former stars. That was the case with these celebrities, who starred in Boys Over Flowers. Their very public, very nasty proceedings caused him to lose all of his endorsements.
Song Joong-ki divorce. Word has it that Song Joong-ki lost many endorsement deals over his divorce from his co-lead from Descendants of the Sun, Song Hye-kyo.

Not even K-pop idols are exempt from having to maintain a squeaky-clean reputation. Do you know about the Burning Sun scandal? It was one of the biggest sex, drug and all-around corruption scandals to rock the K-pop world. Shortly after news of the offences got out, Seungri announced his retirement from the entertainment industry. He served 18 months in prison before being released in February 2023.

Veteran pop idol Yunho didn't fare nearly as badly for his transgressions. He was nabbed while clubbing in Seoul's stylish Gangnam district after hours during the pandemic lockdowns. By itself, that might not have been too bad, but that bar is known for its escort service. He quickly apologized on social media and paid his fines, but that didn't save him from being scrubbed from various food adverts. All this just goes to show that even the highest-paid Korean actors and singers must abide by the rules. Isn't that refreshing?
