Applying to University in High School

Most people that attend university are going to be high school graduates. This means people are going to be between 17-18 years old. In Canada, you have to start thinking about applying to university in grade 11. If you’re attending university you're going to need to take academic courses and have enough credits to consider applying to university. The final deadline to apply to university happens right around February of your grade 12 years. Some schools have different deadlines for applications so it's important to do your research in the program your attending.

The number one reason you're going to be applying to university is that you want to pursue learning in a certain field. This could be because you want to work in that field or it interests you, both are valid answers. On the other hand, if you’re unsure about what program to take applying to university right away isn't the best way. University is costly. You don't want to waste the extra money on something you're not set on. You should be confident about your university decision. In high school, it's also important to take notice of the application requirements. They're going to be certain courses you need in high school to be accepted by the university. Ensure you have all your requirements as far as grades, courses and anything else your program requires.

Applying to University as a Mature Student

In Canada, a mature student is someone who is over the age of 19 and has been out of school for a certain time. A mature student also may or not have a high school diploma. You may think about how a mature student can enrol in a university course if they don't even have a high school diploma. If you are a mature student the university admission board will look at your experience instead of your academic credentials. Another example of a mature student is if you do have a high school diploma but don't have any of the necessary courses to apply the admission board will look at your experience for you to be eligible. Each school in Canada has its mature student guidelines so it's important to speak to the university directly to find out to qualify.

The choice to go back to school can be a big decision. Often it can be a harder decision to make as a mature student as opposed to when you were in high school. If you are considering other careers and need a university degree it can be the right choice to head back to school. Other times if you are employed with a company that can offer incentives to gain a university degree to advance in the company or achieve a higher salary. These are all great reasons to head back to university.

It can be a nerve-wracking decision, especially if you have been out of the classroom for quite some time, but Superprof is here to help. Things to Consider When Applying to University in Canada

There is going to be a few times each year that universities are accepting applications. It doesn't matter if you are a mature student or still in high school these deadlines can be pretty strict and universities a lot of the time won't accept students after the fact. Universities classes have only so many slots of students it’s important to have your application process in early and meet all the requirements before sending your application. Always be aware of these deadlines when you're putting your application together be ready to send it in. The deadlines for university applications are usually around the winter and fall semester, but again always check with the deadlines to the school you're applying to.

Another factor to consider when applying to university in Canada is a late application. Things can happen and dates can be missed. You may still be allowed to apply after the deadline. Each school is going to have different guidelines, but most schools will still accept applications. You'll have to reach out to them directly to apply. Most schools will allow applications as long as they have slots left in the program. Schools would rather have a slot filled than empty because a student missed the deadline. It's not an ideal decision but don't panic, if you miss the deadline there is still time.

The last factor to consider when applying to university is changing your program. This can happen more than you might think. If you submit an application and then decide to change your program it's possible. You just need to update your application with the right program. If you are unable to do this you'll need to speak with the school to which you submitted your application too.
