About Caleb

I am an Associate Design Manager and Associate Architect with 10+ years' experience who received UK qualifications through the ARB prescribed examination route, followed by completing my part 3 at the Architectural Association in London. I advise on how to approach the qualification process from beginning to end highlighting changes to the structure over the last few years. Furthermore, the classes are always underpinned by in-depth knowledge of the UK professional environment at large. Over the past three years I have assisted a considerable number of students to pass their part 1 and 2 prescribed exams, as well as part 3 courses. In addition to learning, I prioritise efficiency and effectiveness, leveraging helpful resources and distilling the core requirements of the exams themselves.

Architectural qualification exams in the UK can be very disorientating. My lessons are designed first and foremost to allay concerns and to set out the priorities for effective studying and production. The lessons will be structured with the student according to their need, and can flexibly dive into particular subjects that warrant more explanation. Classes are held online, and I am happy to accept individuals or groups. These lessons are intended to be precise and assist with the themes and topics which have been agreed in advance. For students requiring tutoring for part 3, the sessions can be topic specific in the format of a lecture, question and answer, or for review of mock papers. Group sessions at a different hourly rate are welcome. Feel free to reach out for a free initial conversation.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

The pandemic offered me the opportunity to focus on qualifications after working for many years. Having completed parts 1, 2 and 3 over the course of six months I realised the particular challenges foreign students may have in becoming qualified in the UK. This was when I set out to commence private tutoring to help individuals answer the questions I had in the beginning.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

These lessons are intended to help students pass their exams. Some students will struggle more than others on particular exam topics and it will be my job to listen to their concerns and determine for myself where the obstacles are. Part 3 qualifications span the greatest breadth and breach the greatest depth of subjects and fortunately for us I love these subjects equally.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The type of teacher that inspires, which I aspire to be, is one that speaks plainly and as a friend, without the common condescension. My job is to suggest and advise so that the student can make informed decisions.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Everything above, and on top of that, a proven track record of bringing my students to passing. 2022 alone saw five students pass their respective exams, which was very encouraging.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A very seasoned professor once told me that there is no need to be unique; being good is good enough. It is intended to drive home the truth that our work is our own, and when it is good it speaks for itself (even more so than it speaks for oneself).
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

We will continue to face the difficulty that the qualifying exams are misaligned against the expectations in reality. Our culture remains that such qualifying exams are not only necessary but must continue to escalate in their defence against new entrants. Despite all this, I sincerely believe that they are worth overcoming in the context of the UK if nothing than to force oneself to confront the subject matter and to master it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Making furniture is my passion, second only to reading. I am afraid it is not teaching.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

What makes me an adequate tutor is my willingness to listen and my belief that each student brings an awareness of what they need, the same awareness that drove them to seek external assistance. Experience has helped me understand common concerns and draws my attention to less common queries in order to commence a discussion that results in greater perception, confidence and peace of mind.
