About Anna
Hello! My name is Anna Tolstaya, PhD, and I am a certified Russian language teacher.
For six years, I taught Russian literature at a university in Saint Petersburg. In 2022, I relocated to Ireland and was delighted to discover how many people here are passionate about Dostoevsky, Gogol, and Tolstoy. Beyond my academic background, I have a personal connection to Russian literature — my surname. In Russian, surnames have gendered forms. Can you guess which famous Russian writer I’m related to? By reading this, you’ve already learned one of the key rules of Russian grammar!
I hold Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education, with a specialization in Russian language and literature. My PhD dissertation focused on 19th-century Russian literature. In 2024–2025, I completed professional retraining at Moscow State University, earning a qualification in teaching Russian as a foreign language.

I take a comprehensive approach to language learning, combining vocabulary building, grammar practice, and role-playing real-life situations to help break down language barriers. I also enjoy introducing students to Russian culture, art, folklore, and traditions.
My lessons follow a communicative method, using modern textbooks for European learners along with audio and video materials. We track your progress in a shared document or chat, and I incorporate tools like Quizlet and Kahoot to make learning interactive and engaging.
I work exclusively with adult learners. I focus on two areas:
- helping complete beginners start learning Russian from scratch,
- supporting advanced learners through conversation practice and fluency development.
I don’t normally offer exam or academic preparation, but I’m happy to discuss specific cases individually.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the teacher's students.
Perfect! Anna was a lot of fun, personable, encouraging, laid out the plan, introduced me to the subject. Very quick responses, flexible, and enthusiastic. I have tried to learn Russian several times in many different ways to be able to converse with my wife’s extended family and I finally feel encouraged and that this is my turning point in learning a new language. Couldn’t recommend Anna enough!

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Anna taught a children's literature course at my university. I really liked that there was a lot of structured information, examples, analytics, and book market analysis. After the course, I became much better versed in children's literature and later connected my work with this particular branch of publishing.
A wonderful teacher! Each lesson takes place in an interesting format, because she really loves the subject she teaches.
Anna was my teacher of the History of literature at the university. I am grateful for the structured presentation of the material, the trusting and friendly atmosphere in the lessons. The teacher provided great support during the writing of my first Coursework. Thanks a lot 🤍
Anna Alexandrovna taught a course on foreign literature at the university where I study. She is an example of a teacher who not only knows her subject perfectly but also inspires a love for literature. Her classes were my absolute favorite.
It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Anna Alexandrovna as an exceptional instructor of Russian literature. Her profound love for the subject is evident in every lesson, transforming the classroom into a space of intellectual discovery.
Anna Alexandrovna possesses a rare gift for presenting complex literary concepts with captivating depth and clarity. She doesn’t merely teach; she invites students to immerse themselves alongside her in the world of literature, fostering genuine curiosity and nuanced understanding. Even when covering texts I had previously studied in school, her insightful perspectives and passionate guidance led me to profound new revelations—revealing layers of meaning I had never before considered.
Her ability to make canonical works feel fresh and deeply relevant speaks to her mastery as an educator. She cultivates an environment where literature becomes a living dialogue, encouraging students to engage critically and personally with each text.
Without reservation, I recommend Anna Alexandrovna. She is not only a brilliant teacher but also an inspiring mentor who ignites a lasting appreciation for Russian literature in her students.
Anna isn’t just a teacher — she’s a guide into the soul of Russian literature. Her mastery of the language is more than academic; it’s heartfelt and deeply intuitive. Through her course, I discovered layers of Russian literature I never knew existed — insights that became the very foundation of my understanding of world classics. Anna has a rare gift: she can spark genuine curiosity, break down complex historical themes, and weave them into literature in a way that makes every session feel like a captivating journey. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone who wants to truly connect with literature, not just study it.
