Sample Lesson Plan: Blending Sounds for Early Readers
Duration: 30 minutes
Goal: Help your child build foundational reading skills by blending sounds into words, boosting their confidence and love for reading!
1. Warm-Up (5 mins) – “Let’s Get Moving with Sounds!”
We start with a fun and interactive activity that gets your child excited about learning! Through a simple clapping game, your child will practice hearing the individual sounds in words. As we say words like “bat,” your child will clap along to each sound: /b/ /a/ /t/. This exercise is not only playful but helps them tune in to the sounds they’ll need to read and spell words confidently.
2. Mini-Lesson (10 mins) – “Watch and Learn with Blending Sounds”
Next, we’ll engage your child with a short, captivating video that shows how we can combine sounds to make words. We’ll start with simple sounds like “b” + “at” = “bat,” so your child can see and hear the magic of blending. The video uses colorful visuals and fun characters, ensuring your child is engaged and excited to learn!
3. Guided Practice (10 mins) – “Let’s Sort, Play, and Blend!”
Now it’s time for your child to take what they've learned and apply it in an interactive game. Together, we’ll play a sound-sorting game where your child will group words by their first sound (e.g., “bat” and “bag” go with the /b/ sound). This keeps things fun, while reinforcing their ability to hear and identify different sounds in words.
We'll also explore a phonemic game where your child will match sounds with pictures, like matching the “b” sound with a picture of a ball. These hands-on activities are designed to keep your child actively engaged while building their phonemic skills.
4. Independent Practice (5 mins) – “You’re a Reading Star!”
Your child will now have the chance to practice on their own, with you cheering them on! Using digital flashcards, your child will blend sounds to form words like “dog” (d + og), and record themselves saying the words. This helps reinforce their learning and builds their confidence as they hear themselves pronounce the words correctly.
Why This Lesson Will Help Your Child:
By focusing on blending sounds, this lesson helps your child develop a key skill for reading: phonemic awareness. It’s the building block for all future reading and spelling success! This fun, structured lesson encourages your child to:
Build confidence in their reading abilities through interactive and enjoyable activities.
Engage with visual and auditory elements that make learning feel like play, not work.
Make fast progress as they master fundamental skills that will help them read and spell a wide range of words.
My program is not only designed to help your child read—it's designed to help them love reading! Each lesson is crafted to be fun, personalized, and focused on small, achievable steps, ensuring your child feels proud of their progress.
