About Phoebe

My guitar teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that music education should be a transformative experience that enriches the mind, body, and spirit. I approach each lesson with the intention of fostering a deep connection between the student and the music they are learning. I begin by understanding each student's musical background, interests, and goals, and I design lessons that are both challenging and enjoyable. I emphasize the importance of developing a strong technical foundation, including proper posture, hand positioning, and tone production, as these elements are essential for musical expression. I also integrate music theory, ear training, and sight-reading into lessons, providing students with the tools to understand and interpret music more effectively. I encourage students to explore a wide range of musical genres and styles, broadening their musical vocabulary and appreciation. Through regular performance opportunities and constructive feedback, I help students build confidence and stage presence, preparing them for public performances. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire students to view music as a lifelong journey of exploration and expression, one that brings joy, fulfillment, and personal growth.

My approach to guitar instruction emphasizes the student’s identity and emotional connection to the music, not just mechanical progress. From day one, I aim to understand who the student is—not only as a learner, but as a listener and a thinker. Guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument, and I use this versatility to engage students through the music they already love, whether that’s classic rock, pop, indie, flamenco, or lo-fi hip-hop.

Technical instruction is delivered in a progressive, digestible manner: scales and exercises are introduced not in isolation but in real-world musical contexts, often tied directly to the songs students choose to study. I introduce theory organically, teaching how chords are built, what makes a progression emotional, or how modes can shape a solo, all through examples that are musically satisfying and relevant to the student. My rhythm training approach involves interactive drills, call-and-response grooves, and extensive play-alongs, which help students internalize pulse and phrasing.

I also bring creativity to the forefront by prompting students to write their own music early in their journey—using small melodic fragments, chord progressions, or even simple rhythmic motifs. With younger students, I incorporate games, storytelling, and visual learning tools to make abstract concepts feel concrete and exciting. For adults, I often focus on goal-setting, learning efficiency, and using guitar as both a meditative practice and a creative outlet. I celebrate progress, no matter how incremental, and frequently reflect on learning goals to keep motivation high. Importantly, I cultivate an environment where making mistakes is encouraged because that’s where discovery and growth happen. My ultimate goal isn’t just to create technically capable guitarists, but to mentor self-aware, expressive musicians who understand that learning an instrument is a lifelong and deeply personal journey.
