About Ethan
Over the past 7 years, I have had the incredible opportunity to teach guitar to school and college students, helping them unlock their potential and discover the power of music. As a teacher, I believe that every student brings something unique to the table, and it is my job to guide them on their individual musical journeys. I aim to make each lesson engaging, challenging, and fun by combining music theory, practical techniques, and creativity. My teaching approach ensures that students develop strong technical skills while also fostering their ability to express themselves artistically. One of my proudest achievements was helping a group of students form a band, and watching them evolve from learning basic chords to performing at local festivals. It was an unforgettable experience to see their confidence soar as they learned how to collaborate, create, and perform together. Beyond the technical aspects of guitar, I’m passionate about showing my students how music helps them become more focused, disciplined, and confident. The guitar becomes more than just an instrument to play—it becomes a way to express emotions, build connections, and create something beautiful. Teaching these students has reminded me of the incredible power music has to shape lives, and it motivates me to continue helping them grow and find joy in their musical journey.

As a guitar instructor, my goal is to make each student’s learning experience as enjoyable and productive as possible. With over nine years of teaching experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a focus on guitar, I bring a deep understanding of music theory, technique, and teaching methodology to each lesson. My approach is rooted in the belief that every student is unique, and my job is to help them discover their own path as a guitarist, whether they’re playing for fun or working towards a career in music. Building a solid technical foundation is essential to any guitarist’s development. I focus on the fundamentals of posture, hand positioning, finger strength, and rhythm—skills that are critical to playing the guitar comfortably and with confidence. Regardless of the musical style a student is interested in, mastering these basics is the key to being able to tackle more advanced techniques. By ensuring students are comfortable with these fundamental skills, I provide them with the tools they need to continue progressing. Once the basics are in place, I make lessons tailored to the student’s personal musical interests. Some students want to play their favorite songs, while others want to master specific genres or techniques. I take care to structure lessons around each student’s musical goals, whether that’s diving into fingerstyle guitar, studying classical repertoire, or improvising over a blues progression. Each lesson is dynamic, offering a balance between skill-building and creative exploration. Music theory is another key component of my lessons, and I teach it in a way that’s practical and relevant to the student’s playing. I introduce theory by relating it directly to the music the student is learning. For example, I might break down the theory behind a song’s chord progression, explore intervals while learning a riff, or study scales to improve improvisation skills. Theory becomes a tool that enhances students’ playing, making their music more expressive and giving them the knowledge to think critically about the music they create. In addition to technique and theory, I foster creativity in every student. For those interested in songwriting, I provide exercises that encourage students to develop their own melodies, chord progressions, and lyrics. For improvisation, I help students explore scales, modes, and chord tones, allowing them to feel confident in creating their own solos. Encouraging self-expression is key to making guitar lessons exciting and meaningful. I also work with students to build confidence for performances. Whether it’s preparing for a recital, a live gig, or a recording session, I ensure students have the necessary skills and mindset to perform confidently. This includes refining their technique, interpreting the music, and overcoming performance anxiety. Finally, I incorporate modern technology into my teaching. Online tools like metronomes, tuners, and interactive tabs help students practice efficiently and stay on track between lessons. These tools supplement the lessons and allow students to continue developing their skills outside of lesson time. By combining traditional methods with modern tools, I create a comprehensive learning experience that is both engaging and effective.
