About Peter
Hi! I'm Peter and I've been in New Zealand for the last five years. I was born in the US, where I went through undergrad and graduate school for acupuncture and Chinese medicine. After coming to beautiful Aoteoroa, I received my Bachelor and Master degrees in Visual Arts at AUT. I grew up around martial arts, starting with my father teaching me judo and beginning lessons at the dojo at the tender age of 5. After tearing my ACL in an accident when I was 20, I began to learn tai chi and have been practicing it ever since. In the last two decades, I have learned Yang style, Wu (Large Frame) style, Cheng Man-Ch'ing's style via William C.C. Chen, and Wudang Dan Pai style along with hsing-i ch'uan and sanda/sanshou. I have competed at national tournaments in North America and was the 2011 North American Champion in Fixed Step Push-Hands in the ICMAC circuit.
I have always loved learning and view teaching as an integral part of that: every time I have the opportunity to teach, I see it as an opportunity for me to learn. I hope you'll allow me to help you on your learning journey and know that I will do my absolute best for you!

I have twenty years of experience learning tai chi and over thirty years experience in martial arts. I have learned from numerous masters in numerous styles and have developed my own methodical and student-centred way of teaching. I truly believe that tai chi is a gift that is available for anyone to learn, regardless of age, talent, or capability.
Lessons can go from 60 to 90 minutes in which we start with stretching and chi kung, move on to forms practice, and end with push hands and application, if in person. The focus is never on learning a movement for the sake of getting to the next one, but instead to fully understand a posture and its place in the overall form before beginning the next.
