About Ryan

Ever since discovering the cello at the age of six, I have continually endeavoured to immerse myself into the beautiful and immense world of music. From playing in orchestras like NCO and LSSO to volunteering with various music charities/societies like IntrasonusUK, I have learnt important practical skills such as musicianship, concert management and a wide array of extended contemporary techniques. Nevertheless, I have always had somewhat of a distinctive interest in understanding the inner-workings of a composition, frequently finding myself wanting to apprehend the very mechanism of a piece of music (especially in terms of how a composer can purposely design certain elements to evoke specific feelings and sensations). This has been for me an area of great inspiration and interest, especially when directed towards the works for media by Tyler Bates and Hildur Guðnadóttir. Throughout my three-year BMus course at the University of Surrey, I have been able to dig deeper in musical practices like historical performance and counterpoint while concurrently exploring several, previously unfamiliar, genres. For instance, as a classically-trained composer/performer, it was fascinating to encounter extended jazz harmony and the process of mixing and mastering a song. During my studies at university, I have also been working part-time at live music venue Roadhouse in Covent Garden, experiencing in authentic intensity modern rock and roll and stage management (frequently setting up microphones and leading sound checks for guest local bands). Additionally, I have formerly had the opportunity to undertake an internship at Opera Holland Park which, while not innately entwined with composition or scoring for the screen, was an extremely valuable experience. Tasked with liaising between singers, actors and producers, I have been amplified my ability to interact with individuals from various backgrounds whilst grasping, from more of an administrative position, the steps necessary when overseeing a successful production. Under the guidance of George Eugeniou, I have also had the opportunity to intern at Theatro Technis, where I similarly explored the ways in which music and drama can interact. Working with high-end novel equipment as sound engineer and producer at one of the iconic theatres in Camden additionally enabled me to grasp a better command for musical gestures and an awareness of the integral narrative functions in music. Finally, by attending workshops and masterclasses over the years, I have had the opportunity to enhance my knowledge in a number of distinctive musical fields. For instance, Stephen Goss discussing medieval music demonstrated imaginative methodologies that are available when composing whereas the introduction to library music by Sophy Purnell and the series by Guildhall School of Music & Drama on film scoring explained a variety of approaches to score processing on Apple Logic Pro X. Moreover, the live audio and visual electronics improvisations by Intraspect as well as the online classes led by Hayden Lauersen both enriched my capability to music engineer and utilise a sequencer. Overall, I believe I have gained valuable experience in a number of musical styles, some of which are yet to be fully cultivated in film, and I would love to explore their commerciality and efficiency. Outside of music, I enjoy running marathons and training at Barnet Combat Academy. These practices have both taught me the importance of discipline, routine and passion, traits equally essential in composition and music in general. In the future I intend to use the knowledge I gain in this course by collaborating with producers, directors, screenwriters and musicians to create a new scenius wave of music.
