About Sean

**I know how it works! I was an EXAMINER for an OXFORD COLLEGE,**

**Over 200 SUCCESSFUL Oxbridge Admissions candidates**

**Long-term PPE applicants of mine have a 110% HIGHER CHANCE (40% compared to 84%) in being asked for interview and 216% HIGHER CHANCE (12% compared to 38%) in offered a place**

I marked essays for PPE Oxford entrants for three years, so I know *exactly* what you need to do. I will tell you all the secrets of the admissions process, from the personal statement, through to the entrance test and the interview.

My students, on average, achieve a 28% increase in their university entrance test results over our time together, once we work together for a number of sessions. When I took the TSA test, I scored in the top 1% of worldwide applicants, and I will share with you how I did it!

For the TSA test, there are specific strategies for the Section 1, and the Section 2 Essay is a very specific format. When I marked the essays, students tended to lose many marks making mistakes that are relatively easy to fix. I have developed a system for the past 10 years for writing Section 2 essays that I will teach you.

The majority of my work is with the top private tutoring agencies in London, and I have been flown across the world (several times!) to tutor individuals and groups in school/university entrance tests and interview preparation.

I will guide you through the technique of writing essays and answering critical thinking questions, for any Humanities subject (LNAT, UKCAT, TSA, UKCAT, Philat, HAT, 11+, 13+). I have developed specific methods for answering all the sorts of questions that come up, and I will pass these onto you.

With interview preparation, I draw my experience going to drama school, and working as a theatre director: we can work, sometimes quite intensely, on your intellectual and emotional presentation. This is a skill! It can be vastly improved in a short period of time.

For the past 10 years, I have also tutored many successful 11+ and 13+ candidates to some of London's top schools (inc. St. Pauls Girls', St. Pauls Boys', City of London, Latymer Upper, Godolphin & Latymer, Highgate, UCS, Westminster, and many more). I have seen what works, and always collect information from students after their exams, so I have developed an expert sense for how to help students sail through the process.

I have an ENHANCED DBS, updated every year - please do not hesitate to ask me to send you a copy.

My Experience:

- 3 years as a TSA examiner for an Oxford college

- I have tutored over 300 admissions candidates (with many successful Oxbridge, Drama School, 11+, 13+, and 16+ candidates)

- 5 years teaching Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, and Economics (A-level) at Westminster Tutors, one of the top sixth-form colleges in London

- 2 years as Head of English and Drama at London Russian Ballet School

- 4000+ hours tutoring experience, mostly working with some of London's top private tutoring agencies

My Education:

- University of Oxford - Philosophy, Politics and Economics (BA, First Class])

- University of Oxford - Philosophy (Masters)

I always tailor my lessons to each individual student, finding out what works best for you. I do not come in with a pre-prepared plan for our first lesson: I see where you are, what learning style works best, how you like to work, and then we go from there.

Prior to our first lesson, I offer a free 10 minute intro phonecall (any admissions advice should be reserved for the lesson).

After the end of the first lesson, if you want to proceed, I will send you a plan of study. If you request it, I can send you FEEDBACK every EVERY lesson.

And I REGULARLY TEST my students, so that we have a concrete MARKER OF PROGRESS, and all of my tutoring is specifically geared towards exam preparation.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Once I had finished my Masters in Philosophy at Oxford, I started teaching at Westminster Tutors, in South Kensington. I realised that I loved teaching! It combined all the interesting topics that I had been studying with the emotional task of trying to empathise and explain them to a student. I especially love it when I see massive improvement (which happens quite often!). I have seen students of mine, especially when it comes to university or school admissions, transform their performance.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach University/school entrance, Philosophy and Drama.

With Entrance interviews and tests, they differ, depending on whether it is for school or University, on the University, and on the subject. But they have some things in common. The entrance tests all are gauging how good you are at critical thinking, at analysing arguments, and explaining your own ideas. Interviews are, in some ways, more fun, because they involve how you emotionally present yourself, which is a skill! And you can get better at it, often in a short period of time.

Philosophy was my first love, and I still enjoy teaching and reading it. I enjoy Ethics and Philosophy of Language the most, particularly the work of the German and French Philosophers of the last 200-300 years. Plato also gets me going.

I studied at a Drama School after leaving University, and I have incorporated what I learnt into my tutoring in general. I now tutor LAMDA, Drama School entrance and Drama A-level.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One of my teachers at primary school seemed to always know what to say at the right moment. I still remember many moments where he spoke and something clicked into place.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Empathy: you have to always start from where the student is, not where you are.

Enthusiasm: you have to enjoy teaching!

And, to be more specific, you have to be specific. Vague words and ideas rarely help. I try to be very specific: what precise word would fit here? what exact line of thought didn't help? what is this objection specifically an objection to? etc.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I didn't like Philosophy (or reading, or school work!) until I left secondary school. I worked very hard at my exams, but I didn't do much the rest of the year, and didn't enjoy any of it particularly. But I started to read in my gap year, and realised I had this love for Philosophy. And this love spread to other subjects, and slowly to learning in general. I guess I feel like it's not too late for anyone, and you can spark inspiration at any moment.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

At this point, I have been teaching these subjects for so long, and understand the examination process, that I sort of think that it's the examiners who have the challenge. I know how it works!
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I write and direct short films and theatre, often about topics in Philosophy.

  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions) ?

I care about how my students do. And I love teaching!
