There is a quote from the philosopher Socrates that speaks to me: "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel."
I believe that learning should engage and empower students. It should spark curiosity and creativity and open doors for them to dream big.
With this in mind, my teaching is guided by the interests and passions of the student. I strive to develop lessons that are connected to real life applications and have a "cool factor." When students get frustrated and ask, "why do I have to know this?" I try to give them concrete answers, whether it is a skill they will use directly or one that will open doors for them later on. (Sometimes it is difficult to find a relevant motivator, but doing necessary things we don't care for is a life lesson in and of itself.)
My methodology is about helping students come to conclusions and learn techniques on their own. This process involves pointed questions and reminders of what they already know. I focus on reinforcing skills by explaining and demonstrating, then walking through examples with the student, and then having the student show their understanding independently.
I have experience teaching in a classroom from early elementary right up to high school, and welcome learners of all ages.
I am a lifelong learner with many passions. I have a multidisciplinary science degree (Neuroscience and Computer Science) as well as three practicums and all coursework towards an Education degree. But that is just my formal schooling.
I am constantly searching for new knowledge and skills to acquire, whether from podcasts, Ted Talks, or online courses. I am a strong believer that the goal of education should be to inspire students and give them the tools and opportunities to succeed. My hope is that they will want to be lifelong learners, too.
I have experience working in a Neuroscience lab (ask me about the rats!) and as a programmer for a tech company (let me teach you about coding a game in Scratch!)
I’ve run STEM camps (robots vs. aliens!) and mentored in a science program for girls (try making a hexaflexagon!)
I’ve taught early literacy (complete with silly voices) and high school physics (no silly voices, but there were superheroes!)
I’ve run escape rooms (with pirates) and scavenger hunts (with spies) and I want your learning path to be as fun as possible.
Join me on that journey!
