About Dr Scott

TEACHING/TUTORING PHILOSOPHY
I am a passionate, engaging educator with over three decades of expertise in university/college teaching, research and environmental consulting who loves teaching and learning. I serve students and encourage receptivity to learning by providing clear instruction and support. Teaching and research provide a complementary synergism for illustrating biological concepts, while simultaneously exposing students to the challenges and successes of research. Educators can sometimes neglect to emphasize the relevance and humanity of biology. When we do not incorporate the human side of science in the stories we tell our students, such as how we became excited about biology and learning, why we love academia, disappointments surmounted and the exhilaration of discovery, we deny our students the opportunity to view themselves as connected with course material. Discussions and problem solving scenarios emphasize integrative and applied learning. Inclusion of contemporary biological research inspires students and informs my teaching by emphasizing hypothesis testing, data analysis, presentation and interpretation, and critical evaluation of research conclusions.

BACKGROUND AND DEMONSTRATED TEACHING EXCELLENCE
I have taught 23 different undergraduate university/college courses for biology majors and non-majors (Year 1 to Year 4) and tutored in biology (college level). My approach to pedagogy originates from select exceptional teachers and from my own style of learning and working with students. Teaching demands a strong, cogent grasp of course material, as well as the "art" of presenting enthusiastically to students. I have received two teaching awards. I have a 94% mean teaching rating from students at six universities in the US and one here in Canada. In 2004, my teaching evaluations from students ranked above institutional and US national averages for comparable private universities.

AVAILABILITY
My schedule is somewhat flexible. Currently, I am available on some Sundays and Mondays (late afternoon/evening), Tuesdays or Thursdays (afternoon/evening), Wednesdays (evening) and Fridays (afternoon).

I encourage a positive, personalized learning environment, proactive thinking and student participation to engage students, while also being sensitive to the ways in which students learn (metacognition). Presenting content through innovative tutoring, readings and applied/real world examples maximizes the student learning experience. In my teaching, I explain course material, share practical examples and include illustrative visuals (eg biological demonstrations, videos) and stories, while inviting student questions/discussion.

The first free 1 hour lesson generally includes introductions/backgrounds, discussion of the students' needs, approach to learning and what they hope to gain from the tutoring (eg goals, what they want to learn, tutoring frequency), review of the course outline for the course for which they are seeking tutoring, discussion of proposed tutoring approach, and review of payment schedule and cancellation policy. The intent is to get to know each other and discuss logistics. Subsequent lessons would typically adopt the following format: review previous session/questions (5 minutes); new content (50 minutes) and a summary (5 minutes).

RATES RATIONALE
Posted rates consider the breadth and depth of my teaching experience at the university/college levels at seven universities in the United States and Canada. As your tutor, I am responsible for developing a personalized teaching methodology and learning experience, provision of content (supplementing student course material, as needed), curating personalized lesson plans that meet student needs and scheduling our weekly tutoring sessions together to best meet your learning outcomes. I provide my own office space and computer equipment/supplies. Tutoring sessions are usually one (1) hour in duration, unless requested otherwise. Hourly rates also apply to time required for preparation, reviewing/editing student work and quiz/exam preparatory studying (as requested by student), creating lesson plans and communications. I maintain an hours/payment log in Google Sheets that is made available to you for monitoring.

Tutoring may be provided remotely (eg Superprof’s virtual classroom “Pencil Spaces” or the Google Meet ecosystem) or in-person. If tutoring is preferred at a student’s home, there is no travel fee if within 10km of Barrie. For safety reasons, I do not provide transportation for students.

TUTORING BUDGET AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE
Students' needs regarding the level and frequency of tutoring can vary. As such, your tutoring budget and payment scheduling can be discussed on an individual basis as part of the FREE first one (1) hour session. Typically, I provide each student with a weekly email-style invoice summarizing the time invested to prepare for and deliver a given week’s tutoring session(s). Payment is required within 24 hours of completing a given week’s tutoring session and before the following week’s preparation. If there are two or three students requesting tutoring in the same subject area and topics, there MAY be opportunity to reduce the hourly rate if the students are comfortable with small group tutoring (as opposed to one to one).

CANCELLATION POLICY
If I cancel a tutoring session less than 24 hours of when it is scheduled to begin and we are unable to reschedule, your next tutoring session will be free (family emergency or illness excepted). I have never cancelled a tutoring session for any reason other than illness. If a student cancels a tutoring session less than 24 hours of when the session is scheduled to begin (and we are unable to reschedule) or does not attend a session, payment for the cancelled/unattended session is still required that week (family emergency or illness excepted).
