About Gabriel

I hold a Master's degree in classical guitar from Indiana University and separate Master's degree in composition for film from New York University. I've worked as a professional musician for over 15 years doing a combination of teaching, performing, audio engineering, recording soundtracks for film and TV, and everything in between. Most recently you might have heard my guitar/bass/ukulele/mandolin playing on the CBC show "Moonshine" or on the TVO documentary "The Long Weekend." My personal favorite music is rock, classical and film music, but I love anything and everything that can spark my interest. I'm a relatively new Torontonian and I'm slowly getting to know everything this city has to offer.

I'm interested in helping you get where you want to go. By getting to know you, your musical taste, and your expectations, we'll create a custom learning path. You'll gradually and methodically strengthen your fundamentals while mastering the songs, solos, and the repertoire you've always wanted to play. We will build you up into a knowledgeable and proficient player without sacrificing the pleasure and passion in music.

During our first lesson we'll talk about what you might already know, what you want to know and where you want to go. We'll get you started on some quick exercises to get your fingers moving and nimble. We'll also decide on the first piece of real music for you to start learning.

During our second lesson we'll reinforce the exercises from the first lesson and we might add some new ones on top of them. Then we'll dive right into the music of your choice. I'll teach you not just how to play it, but also how to practice it so that you can progress during your own time.

During our third lesson we'll make sure your finger exercises are progressing properly and then we'll keep drilling down on the music you're learning. We'll build on top of what we already had and add new sections or techniques to it. We will also start adding music theory in order to deepen your understanding of music. This can mean anything from basic solfege to advanced theory concepts both on and off the instrument.

The best part of teaching music is learning about my students' musical tastes and getting to know new music through them! With that said, I specialize in classical, rock, pop, flamenco, film music, theory, composition, and digital production. I look forward to getting know you!

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I had always been curious about guitar, and I especially wanted to play an old song called "What It's Like" when I became a teenager. By coincidence my school started a guitar ensemble class that year as part of the arts and music requirements, which I got automatically enrolled into. I was lucky that my grandfather had some old guitars lying around so I could practice at home, which I did. A lot. The rest is history!
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

In a wacky world like ours it's sometimes hard to "justify" pursuing art and creative endeavors. After having tried a little bit of everything in life, I know that whenever anybody does something they truly love it becomes a net positive for themselves and for everyone around them. A lot of people are passionate about music and art. I like to think that by helping them get a little closer to what makes them happy I'm making the world a little bit better.
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I don't know if I'd call myself super! Tutoring can be really fun. In the end you're basically just meeting new people and encountering different ways of thinking. I try to have as many laughs as possible with my students during lessons. Every student also helps me reflect on my own craft. By seeing things through their perspective I gain a little more insight into guitar playing and music in general.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

When you're young you don't realize how many teachers are having a formative effect on you. Once you're older (but not old!) you appreciate what they did for you, but now you don't have the chance to thank them. The teachers that helped me are too many to count, both in music and in life. Anybody who shows passion, patience, and an openness to see things from the student's perspective is a role model in my eyes.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Self-reflection, repetition, and lots of patience (especially with yourself).
