About Debra
I am a Special Needs Educator/Advocate who currently provides academic, behavioural, and social skills support to students attending a District Learning Centre within the LDSB. Over the last ten years I have worked with children and adults with Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, ADHD, FAS, LD's, and Dual Diagnosis. I am a certified teacher who has extensive training and experience providing support to students with complex and challenging needs. I provide coaching to parents/caregivers to help them better understand their child's strengths and challenges. I work with Child Psychologists, Behaviour Therapists, Speech/Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and agencies such as Malbty Centre, Ongwanada, and Community Living to ensure a student's goals are met.

I am a calm, caring and compassionate educator who believes all children can succeed given the proper tools and support. I follow the PACE approach (Playful, Accepting, Curious, Empathetic) when working with students and focus on building trusting relationships so that the learning of skills can be enjoyable and successful. All children learn differently, and based on your child's Report Card/IEP/Psycho-Educational Assessment I can tailor learning sessions to build upon their strengths and work on their challenges. I apply ABA methods in all learning sessions and rely heavily on the use of visuals and positive reinforcement. Encouraging students to have a growth mindset, that they can't do something ..."YET"... is key when learning new things whether they be academic, social, or behavioural. Providing explicit teaching of self-regulation strategies and social skills gives students a "tool-kit" of strategies that they can use at school and home. When children learn "how" they learn best, and "what" they need to learn, they are better able to advocate for themselves throughout their school career.
