About Shaun

Shaun Dougherty was born into a family of musicians in Boston, MA. His father, John Dougherty, is an accomplished jazz guitarist and a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Over the years, John has recorded and performed with legendary artists such as Kool & the Gang, Pat Martino, George Benson, Sam & Dave, Lou Donaldson, and many more. Shaun’s mother, Jean Dougherty, is a classically trained organist, graduating from St. Olaf College, and his sister, Stephanie, is a highly versatile vocalist who has performed in a variety of genres, including rock, jazz, blues, and country music. Shaun’s musical journey began after seeing Billy Idol’s video for “White Wedding.” Intrigued by the guitar, he asked his father to teach him how to play the song. “I had never shown interest in music before,” Shaun recalls, “but my dad said if I was serious, we would set up regular lessons.” Excited for his first lesson, Shaun was surprised when they didn’t start with “White Wedding.” Instead, his father introduced him to the jazz standard “Misty.” “Rock and roll is easy,” his dad said, “If you want a long-term career in music, you need to learn the standards.” Now, 35 years later, Shaun continues to play Misty and many other jazz standards professionally, but he also mastered every Billy Idol song and has played in several great rock bands. Shaun attended Berklee College of Music, where he earned a degree in Commercial Arranging, with guitar as his principal instrument. After several years performing in Boston with his original rock band Waking Ophelia (with his sister on vocals) and in a jazz guitar duo with his father, Shaun relocated to Las Vegas, where he spent seven years immersed in the local music scene. There, he joined the rock band The Day After, recording an album and touring the Southwest for two years, including a performance at the Texas music festival SXSW. As the live music scene in Vegas shifted in favor of pre-recorded music, Shaun decided to return to Delaware. Once back, he began teaching guitar at The Grand Opera House’s Arts Academy and started the first-ever after-school group guitar class at Cab Calloway High School and St. Mark’s High School. After relocating to Austin, TX, Shaun now teaches guitar from his home studio, offering both in-person and online lessons through Zoom. In addition to teaching, he continues to work on his original music, including his second ballet, April and After, and performs solo guitar locally.

Never touched a guitar? Been playing for years and want to 'level up'? I can help! My job is to make you a great player so you can play the music you want to play! My lessons are 30 minutes once a week and we do cover technique so you can eventually play whatever you want to play but, playing the guitar is supposed to be fun so I have a 'Top 40 songs every guitarist should know' and we pick from them and also songs you want to learn. As a Berklee graduate, I use some of their guitar books for the lessons and I also rely on my 35 years playing, recording, and touring experience. I believe my real world experience is a great source of information. The Blues is also very important to know as a guitarist so I do teach that to everyone.
