The History of Geography
Geography is studied for a variety of reasons. It helps us understand the world around us and how different physical and cultural features have an impact on each other. It also helps us make better decisions about things like environmental conservation and urban planning. Geography is an important field of study that will continue to evolve as our world changes.
Geography is the study of the Earth and its features. The word geography comes from the Greek words geographic, meaning “earth” and graphein, meaning “to write.”
The first person to use the term geography was Eratosthenes, a Greek scientist who lived in the third century BC. He divided the world into two hemispheres, the eastern and western hemispheres. He also calculated the circumference of the Earth, which was a major achievement for his time.
Geography has been studied in some form since ancient times, but it wasn’t until the eighteenth century that it became its own distinct field of study. In 1708, the first chair of geography was established at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
