- Robert Boyle: Many consider him as one of the founders of modern chemistry. He established Boyle’s law, which says that there is an inversely proportional relationship between absolute volume and pressure of a gas so long as the temperature is kept steady and within a closed system.
- Joseph Priestley: Joseph Priestley was the first scientist to discover oxygen. In August 1774, Priestley isolated what he called an ‘air’ that appeared to be completely new. It wasn’t until March 1775 that he wrote to several people about this new air, after conducting experiments into it. Priestley shut mice in a tight-sealed container filled with the new air and found they could survive longer than with normal air. Although he didn't know it at the time, he had discovered oxygen.
- Jacob Berzelius: he was the first person to measure accurate atomic weights for the chemical elements. He also discovered three elements, cerium, thorium, and selenium, and devised the modern symbols for elements. Finally, he was the one who described how chemical bonds form by electrostatic attraction.
- Marie Curie: she was one of the most notable scientists of her time, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the sole person to win two Nobel Prize in two different categories, and the first woman professor at the University of Paris. She did extensive research in the field of radioactivity and discovered polonium and radium.
- Alfred Nobel: Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist and inventor who invented dynamite. He was a prolific inventor and held 350 patents. He is perhaps most famous for starting the Nobel Prize. The element nobelium is named after Alfred Noble.
- Louis Pasteur: he found that the souring of beer and wine was caused by microorganisms, and that these microbes could be removed by boiling and cooling the liquid immediately – now known as pasteurisation. He also unearthed the process of vaccination. He proved that some diseases are caused by microorganisms that multiply in the body, and that if these microbes are weakened and retained the body forms a resistance to the disease.
- Niels Bohr: he founded quantum mechanics when he remodeled the atom so electrons occupied ‘allowed’ orbits around the nucleus while all other orbits were forbidden. He was also the architect of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics.
- Michael Faraday: he was an English scientist known for his contribution to the study of electrochemistry and electromagnetism. Considered one of the most influential scientists ever, Faraday's inventions of electromagnetic rotary devices established the basis for electric motor technology. His research also helped understand the concept of the electromagnetic field. Ernest Rutherford called him one of the greatest scientific discoverers ever.
- Dmitri Mendeleyev: he was a Russian chemist who came up with the first periodic table of the elements which he published in 1865. He was able to predict the discovery of many more elements using the table.
- Alice Ball: the first successful treatment for leprosy was developed by Alice Ball in the early 20th century. She studied at the University of Washington and the College of Hawaii, and was the first African American and first woman to gain a master’s degree in Chemistry.
- Rosalind Franklin: she is remembered for her X-ray diffraction studies of DNA, which helped in the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the double helix structure of DNA by Francis Crick, James Watson, and Maurice Wilkins later. She also worked on the molecular structures of viruses.
- Sir Humphry Davy: He is credited with isolating or discovering sodium, calcium, boron, barium, magnesium, iodine, chlorine, and potassium. He also invented a safety lamp for miners called the Davy lamp.
- Ernest Rutherford: New Zealand physicist Ernest Rutherford is remembered as the father of nuclear physics. His discovery of radioactive half-life and of radon, and his differentiation of alpha and beta radiation, won him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. Element 104 was named rutherfordium in his honor.
- Antoine Lavoisier: he was a French chemist who is sometimes referred to as the "father of modern chemistry". He developed the "law of conservation of mass" which states that for any closed system, the mass of the system must remain constant over time. He also proved that sulfur was an element and named the elements oxygen and hydrogen.
- Dorothy Hodgkin: Winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her research in protein crystallography, Dorothy Hodgkin is widely considered a pioneer in her area of work. After gaining both undergraduate and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge, she developed the technique of X-ray crystallography, which determines the 3D structures of molecules.
- George Washington Carver: he is best remembered for promoting crops that were alternative to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. He invented ways to prevent soil depletion and developed scores of products made from peanuts, including paints and cosmetics.
