Why Do Mistakes Happen?

Making mistakes on an exam happens for a variety of reasons. The most common is usually students are rushing to get finished. Suppose you're quickly finishing a test. It's better to take your time and go through each question carefully. Even if you do finish quicker, take the time to examine each question. Here are other reasons you can make mistakes.

Nervousness - Exam day is nerve-wracking. Especially for those final exams where they could be worth 30-40% of your grade. The pressure is on. Giving yourself enough time to study for the exam can help you alleviate the feeling of nervousness. Even looking up some relaxation techniques can help combat these feelings.

Tiredness - Lack of sleep can lead to tiredness. It is tired leaves you making careless mistakes. It could be reading a question, skipping a question or anything else along those lines. Getting an adequate amount of sleep before an exam is essential to perform. Don't make any last-minute plans on the night before.

It Happens - Mistakes can also just happen. We all have good days or bad days. Some days you could write a perfect exam while other days you'll miss a few things. Being aware of the mistakes that can happen will certainly alleviate mistakes in the future.

These are just some of the reasons mistakes happen. If you take anything away from this article, it's that a good night's sleep goes a long way. Tiredness is how you make those countless mistakes. The ones that you know are wrong, but you're too tired to notice. Get a good night's sleep before your test day. It's always a good idea.

Student Examples of Mistakes

As we keep mentioning mistakes, let's look at some real scenarios of students that have made mistakes. We won't be releasing any names or even schools to keep the identities of those safe, but these are all examples of mistakes students have made in the past. There is definitely 1 of 3 that you've done.

The Skipped Scantron - Students, more commonly than not, will miss a question on the scantron. By skipping the question on a scantron, every number would be off by one. With missing a scantron, it's awful around. One student decided to leave his answers without changing them. He got the majority of the answers wrong. The only other option is to restart with a new scantron, but if you have done scantron before, that takes some time to repeat everything. We hope he finished in time, but we don't for sure.

Missing Your Name - One student reported he missed his name on the test, and the teacher wouldn't let him claim it. Always write your name on the first thing. You don't want to have a mistake like that happen to you. The name should be the first thing you write. This mistake is entirely avoidable and shouldn't have happened in the first place.

The Mark Scheme - Most teachers write how much each question is worth at the bottom, but one student apparently missed that. It was five mark question, and the student only wrote 1 line. Reportedly, it was a biology question asking to explain the examples of a term. Unfortunately, this student only got one mark out of the possible 5. They were always looking for the mark scheme. This also ties in with reading the question properly. Chances are, this question told them to list five things.

What About After the Exam Mistake?

The day when you get your test back and see the mistake you have made, it doesn't feel good. You think about how you could have easily done better because you made a mistake, but don't think about that. Think about what you can do next time to ensure it doesn't happen again. The mistake isn't a bad thing, as long as you learn from it. The mistakes that happened to those students above, they most likely never made the same mistake again.

If you realize the mistake was because of tiredness. Be sure to get a good night's sleep leading up to your exam. If it causes you to be nervous, try to dig a little deeper. Are you just nervous about exams? Were you unprepared? There are also plenty of exercises you can do to help with calming your nerves on test day.

Of course, the mistakes are frustrating, but don't let them happen again. You can learn from the mistake. Remember thinking about the mistake that happened for the next test won't do you any favours. You could also work with a tutor. They can give you all the tips and tricks for your exam, whether that's study tips or to help your nerves on exam day.
