Why Is Poetry Important?

One of the great things about poetry is it can be different for everyone reading. One reader may infer something different about the same poem as another reader. Poetry is also a powerful language. It engages our senses and moves us as we read. It's an artistic form of writing that takes time and a lot of practice to craft a good poem.

Poetry Quotes

Below we've listed some good poetry quotes down below that create meaning. Some of these quotes also talk about the beauty in poetry. A lot of these quotes also come from parts of a famous poem. We encourage you to check out the full poem. It can give you more context around each of the quotes and may provide a better meaning. There is a ton of great poetry quotes out there. Here are some to read.

"It this Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."

Written by Alfred Lord Tennyson and is said to taken 17 years to write. It's about Alfred's friend that passed away. It looks at life's cruelties. If you love someone and they pass, you experience the grief and the pain it comes with. Compared to if you have never met that person from the beginning. It allows the reader to decide and think critically about whether to love someone or not at all.

"Tread softly because you tread on my dreams."

Written by William Butler, the quote is about entrusting someone with all your hopes and dreams. It's a quote many people can relate to. In the poem, he talks about being poor and only having his dreams and describes the beautiful things he wishes for. We all have to choose to share our ideologies and dreams with the ones we love. It helps us connect and make relationships. It can be scary putting yourself out there, just as this quote mentions.

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the road less travelled by."

Robert Frost wrote it in his poem The Road Not Taken. It's widely one of the most misunderstood poems. People often infer this quote is about taking an unconventional path in life. You're not following the typical path most people take in life. The poem is not about taking two different paths. He chooses the path he always takes and saves the other path for another day. Give the poem another read-through, and you can see the difference.

"Poetry begins with a  lump in the throat."

This quote was said by Robert Frost when he was referring to his writing process. It can be relatable for any poet out there looking to write poetry. It takes time to put together a crafted poem that has each word having power and creating meaning. A good poet can strike an emotion of their reader.  It's good advice for anyone new to poetry.

“Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.”

Written by Allen Ginsberg, the quote is great for anyone writing their poem or trying to come up with a good idea. Poetry is not about the surface layer. It's what you see when you pull back the curtain. Those deep thoughts you may have at night about your perspective and the world that is what a poet writes about. Think creatively and write the world how you see it. Only you can provide the perspective you have.

"Poetry is plucking at the heartstrings and making music with them."

Written by Dennis Gabor, the quote is another one about the beauty in poetry. As we mentioned above, poetry can create meaning and expression. It causes emotion and feelings. A good poem represents all of these things through words. A good poet will be known how to incorporate these emotions using their words that impact the reader.
