How does technology impact art?

First of all and before delving into this article, we must define art! Art is a form of creative expression and how humanity has represented its feelings, emotions, experiences, circumstances, and the perception of everything surrounding us. As an anonymous phrase establishes, "Art is a witness to the history of humanity and is a spectator of our evolution," in our opinion, highly sage words.

Art can be classified in different ways. It has no limits, and its classifications are not mutually exclusive. Within the main categories of art, we find:

  • The Fine Arts refer to the primary forms of artistic realization or aesthetic representation cultivated historically by humanity. They encompass architecture, sculpture, painting, literature, dance, theater, and music.
  • The Visual arts are unique and free of expression creations generated by man and appreciated through sights, such as painting, photography, video, drawing, and printmaking.
  • The Plastic arts involve all the disciplines where the artist uses physical manipulation to create art, such as sculpture, architecture, painting, engraving, and drawing;
  • The Applied arts are expressions embodied in everyday objects, such as industrial or decorative arts, journalistic photography, design, or illustration.
  • The Performing arts include theater, dance, and performance. Here the body, the voice, and inanimate objects are used as artistic expression.
  • The Musical arts are the artistic manifestation in which sounds and silences are manipulated through melody, harmony, and rhythm;
  • The Literary arts refer to the art of the written word, such as the novel, poetry, and essay.
  • The Graphic arts include engraving and lithography. Today we can also include digital prints and computer-generated graphics here.

What are the digital arts?

Over time, forms of expression have evolved thanks to the contribution of new technologies. Technology has impacted our daily life in a significant way. How could it not also modify art?

Digital art refers to all the artistic practices and interactions around applying for vectorial and gratifying programs or using digital elements in their production process or exhibition. Art has incorporated technology into each of its processes, for example, through digital projections, high-quality sound, Video mapping, 3D technologies, among many others. Thanks to these technologies, art has been reflected and enriched, especially in photography and cinema.

Examples of Digital arts:

  • 3d modeling: 3D modeling is the methodology that encompasses the development of three-dimensional objects through CAD software (Computer-Aided Design). This method allows representing objects in a particular virtual environment through mathematical models.
  • Pixel art: is digital art created through software that uses raster graphics editing programs to edit images at the pixel level. The raster graphics are also called bitmap graphics, which use tiny rectangular pixels.
  • Typographic art: We can define typography as the art of designing the letters and distributing the space to create a graphic representation and communicate a message.
  • Digital airbrushing: This type of art is used to color or retouch photographs, hide joints between two objects, or eliminate defects.
  • Vector Art: Refers to creating digital illustrations or icons from vector illustration software. Vector art images are SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) files, which means we can change their size without affecting their quality.
  • Generative art: It is the artistic expression that is generated algorithmically through software. However, artists can also use chemical, biological, mechanical, and robotic systems. In short, generative art combines abstract areas such as mathematics, philosophy, and visual art. Have you ever seen any mesmerizing painting with complex colors? Here you may have a generative art example!
  • Net Art: It is an art form enabled by interactive electronic or digital (audiovisual, computerized, telematic) technologies. It is an artistic production specifically designed to be distributed through the Internet.
  • Interactive art: With interactive digital art, artists could add sound, temperature, or movement sensors to their work, allowing the viewers to "live" it, avoiding a passive state, and participate in their creation.
  • Digital sculpture: It can also be called 3D sculpture and refers to using 3D tools to sculpt digitized clay or plasticine, something similar to traditional sculpture, but virtually. It is ideal for creating organic objects and characters, mainly used in film production.
  • Photography and digital imaging: Digital art photography is used to create artistic works through digital media without using a camera. One of its enormous advantages is the quality of the details we can appreciate.

What is the importance of technology in art today?

The Internet has a huge impact today on both the production and marketing of art. Thanks to social networks and initiatives such as online art galleries like the Google Art Project, artists now get more exposure and promote their works online. And this has happened in all artistic disciplines, such as painting, sculpture, cinematography, photography, graphic design, fashion design, architecture, dance, literature, music, and many others. Also, merging technology and art facilitates access to culture to everybody and encourages contemporary artistic creation by providing new technological tools.

We found it a bit drastic to say that perhaps in the next few years, there will be no art without the Internet. However, we cannot rule out that the birth, evolution, and diffusion of art, in its different disciplines, are linked to technology, and they will continue to be. The Internet opens up many possibilities in all aspects of our lives, but we also have to adapt to constant change.

What is an Interactive Blackboard?

An interactive whiteboard (IWBs) is an excellent tool that can be adapted for teaching-learning use, carrying out presentations, graphics, illustrations, animations, schemes, conceptual maps, simulations, videos, movies, among many others. The interactive whiteboard is controlled through a computer, using a pen, other devices such as a mouse, or even using your fingers. You don't need any pencils, markers, chalk, brushes, or another traditional tool to draw on it.

Before we look at some examples of virtual whiteboards for drawing, let us review the main features integrated into most models.

  • Document sharing
  • Image integration
  • Drawing and tracing
  • Annotation
  • Possibility of editing by different users
  • Saving and sending documents
  • Chat and messaging system
  • Recording voice comments
  • Option to view all the steps involved in making a diagram or drawing
  • Mind-mapping and creating heuristic solutions

In other words, digital whiteboards replace the chalkboard, the classic whiteboard, and the flip chart traditionally used.

When it comes to drawing and tracing, this new technology is efficient since it offers the possibility of creating images, modifying them, making handwritten annotations, saving them, printing them, sending them by email, and exporting them to different formats. The digital board offers much more dynamic solutions and has a more interactive and scalable design.

Types of digital whiteboards:

  1. PDi (Large Format Interactive Whiteboard): This whiteboard type is usually connected to a computer and a video projector. For this whiteboard, we can use an interactive pen to carry out all its functions, such as annotation on the projection surface, or some models can also be used in a tactile way. This type of board uses electromagnetic induction, or infrared.
  2. PDiP (Portable Interactive Digital Whiteboard): As its name suggests, we can quickly move this type of interactive blackboard and use any projection surface such as a roll-up screen or a giant screen. It is also generally used during the teaching-learning process.
  3. Tablet Monitor: We can connect this type of whiteboard to any computer, be it a laptop or desktop. The computer is connected to a video projector, and the screen image is projected onto any projection surface.

As you notice, some boards are meant explicitly for education and distance learning. Others are meant maybe just for the business community. However, here we are most interested in those virtual whiteboards intended for amateur or professional graphic designers, illustrators, cartoonists, and those interested in learning how to draw!

Are you ready to boost your creativity? If you're starting in the world of digital art, an interactive whiteboard might be an excellent tool for you and a simple way to get your creativity flowing. Forget about buying costly frames! Learning how to draw on a tablet had never been so simple!

Try out these Digital Whiteboard Apps!

If the virtual whiteboard is an efficient tool for school, imagine how it must fire an artist's imagination!

For drawing, digital whiteboards can help you sketch anything you want, and when we say anything, it is precisely that! Are you excited about trying this out? You will not regret it!

We have chosen these apps as they are versatile and easy to use for beginners to experienced landscape drawing and portrait painting experts! Here is a list of Digital Whiteboard Apps for you to consider if you are interested in learning to draw differently.

  • Deekit

Deekit is a free online whiteboard app that provides a large canvas for visual conversations and collaboration online with the visual aid of drawings, images, and notes.

Deekit is a site for free online collaborative tools, full of tools and features. Here, you will find all of the tools that anyone painting a portrait or perspective digital drawing could hope for: such a tremendous amount of types of brushes, and color palettes, among many others. You won't miss any drawing supplies with this versatile digital canvas! Deekit also offers a lock function to prevent someone from modifying the canvas. For example, if you draw a fantastic human body and you do not want anyone with access to change it, you can lock that portion of the canvas. The collaborators will have access to the rest of the tableau, so they can draw their human figures and die of envy to see yours! Imagine how easy it will be to improve your creativity with this tool!

  • Flockdraw

Flock Draw is a free online whiteboard tool to paint and draw. It is a great tool to invite artists to collaborate on the same art piece. Have you ever wondered what a digital pencil sketch would look like? Are you in love with colored pencils? Are you a beginner at reproducing manga?

At Flockdraw, you only need a login to start improving your drawing skills without buying any drawing pencils or paper! Also, this site permits you to create your online gallery and study other artists' drawing techniques. And, you can even export your work to a blog or other website!

  • PixiClip

PixiClip is another tremendous online interactive whiteboard that works in any web browser. If you have an iPad, you can capture your writing as you draw pictures, type in a message, or even show your work solving a math problem.

Unlike the other IWBs we've uncovered, this platform does not allow real-time collaboration with other users. However, it is an excellent tool for preparing presentations and other visual media. This application will be ideal if you do any line drawing or dimensional work, such as a graph or a scaled drawing. While somewhat limited in options for illustration, this site also offers a bonus: voice and video recording!

Pixiclip is an excellent way to make art videos. You only need to draw your realistic drawing and then narrate your design before posting it. In this manner, you could sponsor your drawing class!

An essential thing to note is that these virtual drawing and painting sites do not compete with Photoshop or more advanced drawing software. However, you can think about them as complementary or an additional outlet for your creativity. Whether you decide to go for the online tools, we already mentioned or any other option, you could get a lot of use out of them.

  • Groupboard Collaborative Online Whiteboard

Groupboard Collaborative Whiteboard is a macOS application that will turn your Ipad or tablet into an interactive, portable art studio. Groupboard is a free collaborative whiteboard or drawing board, allowing you to draw and chat in real-time, sharing with other people anywhere on the Internet, even with users using a web browser or an iPhone or iPad. You can use Groupboard for online tutoring, collaborative design, or to improve your creativity!

If you consider yourself a perfectionist, this app is for you! Just as with any other picture you want to examine closely on your iPhone, you can zoom in when drawing animals or a human face by spreading your two fingers across the screen. Once magnified, you can quickly and realistically contour a jawline or draw an eye, among many others.

Through this app, you will find all of these digital drawing tools: colored pencil, graphite pencil, eraser, among many others. But Lensoo also has a great feature not found on other apps: step-by-step instructions.

Here is how it works: first, each contour line is saved as it is drawn while you draw your doodle. As you playback the video, you can see your simple drawing create itself, stroke by stroke.

  • Sketchpad: Draw, Create and Share!

Sketchpad is an innovative virtual whiteboard used to draw through a computer while interaction occurs. The system consisted of input, output, and computation programs to decipher information sketched directly on a computer screen.

It's a free online drawing application directed to all ages. And here, you can create all types of digital artwork to share online and export to JPEG, PNG, SVG, and PDF formats.

  • AutoDraw

AutoDraw is a free web-based tool that is a bit similar to Microsoft Paint, which allows you to draw and express your creativity. You can accomplish this by using a mouse or a touchscreen if you can do it. A considerable advantage of AutoDraw is that talented artists will help you draw, but don't forget that you need Javascript for this app to work.

  • SketchTogether - Web Whiteboard

SketchTogether is an excellent real-time online interactive whiteboard that lets teams participate and modify visual content like drawn mockups, annotated screenshots, and notes. SketchTogether is a paid app; however, you will have access to all features, such as sketches and folders, during your trial period. Are you looking for a way to draw with your friends online?
