The exploratory sessions can determine many motivations to seek support from professional coaching:

The second phase of the interview, is where the professional coach focuses in on the problem or problems that the client wishes to work on and develops and validates a probable action plan given a specific timeline or phases.

On this basis, it will be possible to tailor a coaching cycle or sessions,  by determining the modalities of the sessions:  rhythm, frequency, duration of the sessions, time and location, setup of a formal coaching schedule, and of course your professional coaching fees.

At this stage, coaching tools and strategies are explained to the client and it is essential that the they are made to feel fully involved in this personal support plan, so it's easier to commit to and anticipate measurable and tangible results.

It is common practice that the first session is free  to establish the first contact and assess the feasibility of the client's goals, motivations and challenges and within the anticipated time-frame.

How To Get Ready For A Session?

Whatever the speciality of career coaching services in Canada you seek to coach in, whether it be individual worker coaching, executive mentoring and training,  or communication seminars for middle management, the contribution to an employees work experience and career progression should never be underestimated.

From the beginning you can determine and agree to a plan and coaching methods that may work best depending on your individual clients. You need to timely and regularly review the progress, reflect at the beginning of each session and assess how effective your client managed any given situation given the the tools you may have worked on.

In professional coaching reviewing is important,  not only the positive points learned but equally any failures. It  is important to learn and draw lessons from positive as as well as negative outcomes.  The coach must always be ready to adjust and advance, or amend their strategy if necessary.

Every new session should  be prepared in advance,  in accordance  with your clients' progress and pace of learning. Coaching requires great flexibility, creative and critical thinking to find solutions for any given problem your client may be facing.

Sometimes even the best prepared session with every coaching tool available, will have unexpected obstacles and other issues that may impact the session. It's important for a coach to meet this challenge and also provides an opportunity to teach the client,  how to adapt and analyse any given situation that may arise, how to best approach problems or challenges,  and in turn find all possible solutions to a problem in a calm and efficient manner.

Individual coaching takes place in the form of face-to-face interviews (most often), or video conferencing on Skype.

The sessions should be about two weeks apart, this allows the time to work on the advice provided at the previous session: each session should include an analysis of the progress made and also set up any new action.

The client will then be invited between each session to evaluate the progress made and implement any new methods suggested by the coach, to enhance their professional routine.

The coach must prepare a number of practical exercises to submit to his client, including such scenarios:

  • Organisational Coaching: new ways of organising, management styles
  • Conflict Resolution Coaching: manage and resolve conflicts
  • Improve self perception: how to assert oneself, motivational
  • Communication Strategies: negotiating strategies, effective speaking
  • Effective Leadership; manage and lead meetings and conferences

Professional coaching is all about helping employees become the best version of themselves: to achieve tangible results, coach and client need to trust and have confidence in each other, They both need to work towards the same goals. Normally coaching session are completely private ,with an understanding that coaches will keep anything said during sessions in the strictest of confidence.

Coaching when financed by the company, the coaching takes the form of a tripartite contract,  in relation between a coach, the employee and their human resources department.

In fact, coaching within a company will follow substantially the same protocol in preparation as the individual coaching session do, but the stakes will often be higher.

What Is The Role Of A Coach?

The first sessions are usually always full of apprehensions and maybe scepticism for some.

The primary role of the personal coach is to create a relationship of trust, and it will be paramount  that the client can honestly disclose all the information needed to resolve their problems or issues, and to ultimately help them progress.

There may also need to share other issues or problems in the emotional realm, with previous traumas or family conflicts,  psychological barriers, that can have profound and lasting effects on the personal and professional life of a client. It's important that they can feel confident to share these issues to help them move forward professionally.

Therefore, a coach must be empathetic, exude warmth and be a good listener, and more importantly not be judgemental in their approach to clients. They must establish that any criticism is meant constructively and objectively to help the client empower themselves and gain confidence in their own abilities to overcome and achieve their goals.
