About Lathan

I began my musical journey at age 7 with piano, followed by ukulele at 9 and clarinet at 11. Throughout middle and high school, I consistently made county and district honor bands from 7th to 12th grade. I attended NC Governor's School West for instrumental music in 2017 and received a full scholarship to Cannon Music Camp at Appalachian State in 2016. In 2018, I was honored with the John Philips Sousa award for superior musicianship and awarded a $10,000 scholarship to study music at UNC-Charlotte. I pursued Music Education on clarinet at Appalachian State University for two years, where I also played mellophone with the Marching Mountaineers. Although I eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, my passion for music has always been a driving force in my life. My diverse experience across multiple instruments and ensembles enhances my teaching, allowing me to provide a deep understanding of music theory to my students.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my extensive musical background and dedication to teaching. My lessons are enriched with advanced music theory, making learning both educational and inspiring. I focus on creating a patient and humorous environment, aiming to foster a genuine love of music in my students. My lessons cater to students from 5 years old to adults, whether they are beginners exploring a new instrument or advanced musicians refining their skills. I also specialize in helping students manage performance anxiety and develop effective practice routines with clear goal-setting. Whether you're interested in ukulele, clarinet, or deepening your knowledge of music theory and ear training, my lessons provide a supportive and personalized environment for musical growth.

About the lesson

My clarinet lessons are designed for students aged 10 and up, from complete beginners to advanced players. I focus on developing a strong foundation in breath control, proper technique, finger placement, embouchure, and dynamics. Each lesson incorporates scales, arpeggios, and etudes to build technical proficiency. I emphasize stylistic playing, helping students understand phrasing and articulation to bring musical pieces to life. Additionally, I enjoy arranging music that resonates with my students’ personal tastes, making the learning process more enjoyable and relevant.

A typical clarinet lesson starts with warm-up exercises to build muscle memory and improve tone production. We then move on to technical exercises, such as scales and arpeggios, followed by work on repertoire that is tailored to the student’s level and interests. I provide constructive feedback throughout the lesson, helping students identify areas for improvement while celebrating their progress. My approach is to make clarinet playing not just a skill but an expressive art form, guiding students to develop both their technical abilities and musical expression.
