About Leesa
Leesa is a didactic artist whose work is deeply intertwined with her personal journey through grief and loss. When the weight of her emotions becomes too overwhelming for words, she turns to painting, and when the brush cannot capture her feelings, she writes. Art has been both her therapy and her catharsis as she navigates the profound sorrow of child loss, using it as a tool to explore and articulate the spiritual feminine.
Leesa’s passion for portraiture began in her teens, evolving from sketching faces to using real people as her canvas during her successful career in the fashion industry. Her expertise in hair and makeup artistry earned her the title of Hair and Makeup Artist of the Year in 2003. After years of working with famous faces across fashion, television, and bridal industries, Leesa returned to painting in 2016, driven by the need to process the devastating loss of her beloved daughter, Star Dawn.
Her artistic journey has been marked by significant milestones, including an artist residency at Chateau Orquaveaux in France in 2019, where she spent four transformative weeks with artists from around the world. In 2023, Leesa was selected for "Quarantine," an artist mentorship program in Menorca, Spain, which further honed her focus and drive. Her leadership as Vice President for RedWest Creative Co-op also allowed her to cultivate skills that continue to enrich her artistic career.
Leesa earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2021, a period during which she expanded her practice by experimenting with various techniques and mediums. Her work is now characterised by a powerful blend of influences, including fashion, mythology, and the occult, through which she critically examines societal constructs of gender, power, and beauty. She deliberately sources materials like textiles, fashion magazines, and photographs, integrating them with text to emphasise how the spoken word can ignite social change.
Leesa’s art aims to empower and elevate the intersectional feminine identity. She paints women who inspire her, adorning them with symbols such as gems, butterflies, and flowers—each representing the complex and often contradictory relationship women have with beauty, innocence, protection, and patriarchy. These elements, whether standing alone or interconnected, symbolise overlapping identities and intersectionality. Her goal is to create harmonious works that reflect the unity and diversity of these components.
Leesa has participated in several group exhibitions, and in 2021, she achieved a significant milestone with her first solo show at BlackCat Gallery. Her intention has always been to capture the essence of her subjects, whether on canvas or in real life. Painting faces remains her true passion, as it serves as a profound medium for advocating social change and equality through art.
