About Laura

My philosophy for teaching saxophone centers on fostering a strong technical foundation while encouraging personal artistic growth. I believe that technical mastery—breath control, embouchure formation, finger dexterity, posture, articulation, and intonation—is the essential groundwork upon which expressive, confident playing is built. I approach each student as an individual, tailoring lessons to their goals, musical tastes, and learning style. Improvisation is a vital part of my curriculum from early on; I guide students through scales, modes, chord progressions, and rhythmic patterns using ear training and call-and-response techniques that cultivate creativity and spontaneity. Theory is not taught in isolation but integrated directly with repertoire and improvisation to help students connect the dots between concepts and music. I encourage students to explore a variety of genres—jazz, blues, pop, classical—to keep lessons relevant and exciting. Setting realistic goals and developing consistent, efficient practice routines are crucial for sustained growth, and I work closely with students to design these. I also leverage technology like recording devices, tuners, metronomes, and digital backing tracks to deepen practice quality and self-awareness. One of my proudest teaching moments was helping a student evolve from a timid beginner to a confident soloist performing with their school ensemble. I strive to create a supportive, inspiring environment where every saxophonist feels empowered to grow technically, creatively, and personally.

Teaching saxophone is not just about mastering notes and scales but about cultivating a lifelong love for music and personal expression. My philosophy centers on building a strong technical base—proper posture, breath control, embouchure, finger dexterity, articulation clarity, tone quality, and rhythmic precision—while fostering a safe and encouraging environment where students feel free to experiment and express themselves.

I tailor my instruction to each student’s goals, whether they aim to perform jazz improvisations, classical repertoire, blues solos, or pop melodies, ensuring lessons remain engaging and relevant. Music theory and ear training are seamlessly woven into lessons to deepen understanding and support improvisational confidence. I leverage technology such as recording apps, metronomes, tuners, and play-along tracks to facilitate focused practice and self-assessment.

Beyond technical skills, I emphasize the importance of performance skills, helping students develop stage presence, overcome anxiety, and connect emotionally with audiences. One rewarding teaching moment involved a student who was initially shy and uncertain but blossomed into a poised performer who delivered a heartfelt solo at their school recital. I am dedicated to nurturing not only proficient saxophonists but passionate musicians who communicate their unique stories through their instrument.
