About Dr Sean

I enjoy helping students understand physics & maths and turn that into exam results!

I studied GCSEs and A-Levels in the UK, before my degree in Physical Natural Sciences at Cambridge (UK) and MIT (USA). I completed my PhD in 2008 and have been working as a research scientist in the UK and Germany since.

If you'd like to explore tutoring together, please drop me a message and we can arrange a time together. Please note I only do in-person tutoring in the Wimbledon/Raynes Park area. I look forward to hearing from you

In our first lesson we will look at your objectives and aspirations and the right lesson structure and preparation that can support that. My style is to teach by finding different ways to explain topics, and my preference for teaching is to use visual methods in lessons. I help students understand the importance of good exam technique to demonstrate what they have learnt. When it comes to exam preparation I am laser focused in helping dissect mock papers leaving no detail of the exam process unturned! Please note that after the first lesson, minimum lesson length is 60 minutes (virtual & in-person).

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in physics and private tutoring?

My passion for physics began during my GCSEs and A-levels when I started to see how the laws of physics explain the world around us. Whether it was understanding the motion of objects, the behaviour of waves, or the mysteries of space, I found it fascinating how mathematical principles describe reality so precisely.

I discovered my love for tutoring at university, helping classmates and younger students. I enjoyed breaking down difficult topics using visual explanations and real-world applications. Seeing students go from confusion to confidence was incredibly rewarding, and that experience shaped my teaching approach.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach GCSE and A-level physics, focusing on conceptual clarity and visual learning techniques.

I particularly enjoy teaching mechanics, waves, and astronomy.

Mechanics is intuitive and helps students understand forces, motion, and energy-key to understanding the physical world.
Waves are fascinating because they explain everything from light to sound, and their applications range from music to medical imaging.
Astronomy is always a favourite, as it explores the physics of the universe, from black holes to particles, and often sparks curiosity in students.
One challenge many students face in physics is the mathematical side of the subject. I help students break down equations step by step, making calculations less intimidating and more accessible.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes! My A-level physics teacher had a way of making the subject feel exciting and approachable. He didn't just teach formulas-he encouraged us to visualise concepts, ask questions, and relate physics to real life. His enthusiasm made a big impact on me, and I try to bring that same passion into my tutoring.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    A great physics tutor needs:

Clarity - Breaking down abstract topics into step-by-step, structured explanations.
Adaptability - Adjusting explanations to match different learning styles.
Visual Teaching Skills - Using diagrams, videos, and real-world examples to reinforce understanding.
Exam Strategy Focus - Teaching students not just how to understand physics, but how to apply it in exams for maximum marks.
Encouragement & Patience - Building confidence is just as important as building knowledge.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my students once struggled with waves and interference-the concepts felt too abstract. Instead of just going through equations, we did a hands-on experiment with water ripples, watched real-life demonstrations, and related it to how noise-cancelling headphones work.

Once he could see the physics in action, everything clicked. He not only improved his grades but also found a real appreciation for the subject. Moments like that make tutoring so rewarding!
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One challenge students often face in physics is exam technique-they understand the material but struggle to structure answers for full marks. That's why I focus on exam coaching, helping students perfect their responses to both calculation-based and written questions.

Another challenge is maths-related anxiety, particularly with A-level physics calculations. My approach is to break down problems step by step, using plenty of visual aids to make abstract concepts more manageable.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion?

Beyond physics itself, I have a passion for making science accessible and helping students gain confidence in their abilities. I enjoy teaching visually, using diagrams and real-world applications to bring physics to life.

I also enjoy exam strategy coaching, ensuring students are not just learning physics but mastering the exam technique to excel in their GCSEs and A-levels.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions?

I teach through visual methods, making difficult concepts easier to grasp.
I focus on exam strategy, ensuring students can apply their knowledge effectively.
I tailor lessons to the student, building their confidence and helping them achieve their best results.
Most importantly, I genuinely care about my students' success and am committed to helping them not just learn physics, but truly understand and enjoy it.
