About Joshua

Hi, my name is Joshua.

I am a currently student at the University of Sydney where I am undertaking a Master of Environmental Science. I completed my undergraduate studies in 2014, also at the University of Sydney, obtaining Bachelor degrees in Civil Engineering with Honours, and Commerce majoring in Finance. I maintained a distinction grade in my undergraduate studies and have a high-distinction grade in my graduate studies.

In the years between my undergraduate and postgraduate studies I worked in strategy and transformation within the telecommunications and construction industries. During this time I continued tutoring mathematics and physics in the evenings, after work. Now, having returned to study, I find myself with a great deal more flexibility and am eager to help more students.

Tutoring is something in which I take great pride and from which I derive great satisfaction. Each of my previous students has seen marked improvements in not only their academic results, but also their enjoyment of learning. This of course has benefits that extend to other subjects, beyond mathematics and physics.

Tutoring experience: Tutoring mathematics since 2010.

Lesson length: 1 hour.

Lesson level: Students from year 3 to year 12. Mathematics taught up to and including the HSC advanced course.

I have tutored mathematics since my undergraduate studies, which I commenced in 2010. In that time I have had a diversity of students from a myriad of backgrounds, a variety of school experiences, and with a broad range of prior learning, educational attainment, and academic achievement. I derive great satisfaction in working with each of them, building relationships to understand how they learn most effectively and in turn, facilitating their discovery of the reward learning holds.

It is no secret that learning provides a tremendous opportunity for both academic and personal development. Naturally, a student’s relationship with learning has the capacity to significantly influence this development. I believe the learning process can be engaging and enjoyable and have observed that enhanced development occurs where this dynamic exists. In the pursuit of these outcomes, I endeavour to instil both confidence and curiosity in my students, providing them tailored lessons so they may realise their potential and flourish.

The possession of robust foundational knowledge is a vital element of enhanced learning outcomes. As such, I strive to ensure each of my students has a deep understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin content. This understanding is an essential element of success and augments the ability to contend effectively with more challenging content and questions, which tend to place greater emphasis on critical and creative thinking.

With respect to content, I align my tutoring with the curriculum and respective subject syllabi. This ensures my students are working directly on the material they will encounter in their assignments and examinations, positioning them well to secure the best possible academic outcomes. To assist with this, beyond the content, I equip my students with study skills which provide strategies and techniques to help improve their ability to learn.
