About Madison

Teaching flute over the past 8 years has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of students—from absolute beginners holding the instrument for the first time to intermediate players refining their tone, technique, and musical artistry. I place strong emphasis on building a solid technical foundation: breath support, embouchure shaping, posture, and finger coordination. These elements are essential for developing a clear, controlled, and resonant sound. Rhythm accuracy and tone consistency are also core areas of focus throughout each student’s journey. Musical expression is woven into every lesson, with particular attention to dynamics, phrasing, vibrato, and articulation. I help students connect emotionally with their pieces, encouraging them to shape each phrase thoughtfully. As students grow, they develop not only control over the flute but also their own distinct musical voice. Music theory is introduced in a practical, hands-on way, always linked to the music students are currently learning—be it a baroque sonata, a lyrical étude, or a contemporary pop arrangement. Even beginner flutists are gently introduced to improvisation, exploring small motifs and scale-based patterns that build confidence, creativity, and active listening skills. Every lesson is tailored to match the student’s goals, experience, and musical taste. Some students may be preparing for school band auditions, while others may be passionate about learning solo repertoire or exploring the expressive possibilities of modern music. I believe that when students connect with the music they play, their enthusiasm grows and their practice becomes more meaningful. One of my most rewarding teaching moments was helping a high school student prepare a solo for a state competition—they overcame performance anxiety through guided practice and earned high marks for both technical skill and expressive playing. I work closely with each student to establish effective practice routines, set achievable goals, and track their progress over time. Whether preparing for a performance, building repertoire, or simply enjoying the process of learning week by week, my aim is to help each student become a confident, expressive flutist who understands both the discipline and the joy of music-making.

My flute teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student deserves an engaging, structured, and deeply personal learning experience. Whether guiding a beginner through their first notes or refining an advanced player’s tone and technique, I design lessons that are flexible, goal-oriented, and tailored to the individual. My goal is to cultivate both strong foundational skills and a lifelong passion for music.

Flute playing demands technical control, but it also invites lyrical expression. I place strong emphasis on posture, breath control, embouchure, tone production, articulation, finger agility, and rhythmic fluency from the very first lesson. These essentials form the foundation of confident performance. For beginners, we build step-by-step using simple melodies and tone exercises. For intermediate and advanced students, we tackle etudes, scales, and full-length pieces that challenge their dexterity, dynamics, and musical interpretation.

Beyond technique, I want each student to feel connected to their music. I incorporate a wide variety of repertoire, from Baroque sonatas to movie soundtracks to folk tunes. Lessons often include music chosen by the student to keep practice joyful and meaningful. I also include sight-reading, ear training, and phrasing exercises to enhance well-rounded musicianship.

One of the most rewarding parts of my teaching is encouraging creativity. I incorporate activities like guided improvisation, basic composition, and ensemble playing to nurture each student’s musical personality. One standout experience was helping a young student compose a short flute solo inspired by nature—it was an empowering step that boosted their confidence and connection to music.

Technology is an ally in my teaching. I use metronome apps, recording tools, digital sheet music, and online resources to help students track their progress and develop self-awareness. These tools also allow for engaging practice between lessons.

Ultimately, my mission is not just to teach flute, but to create a supportive environment where students grow into confident, expressive musicians. I want them to leave each lesson feeling inspired, capable, and proud of their progress.
