About Mathew

Over the past seven years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching guitar to students in both school and college settings, and what keeps me passionate is watching learners grow—not just as musicians, but as confident individuals. I believe that good teaching starts with listening. Every student brings a different story, different musical influences, and different goals to the table. Some want to play their favorite pop or rock songs; others are more curious about theory, composition, or jazz improvisation. I make it a point to create a personalized curriculum that combines practical skill-building with creative exploration. In each lesson, I focus on key skills like finger technique, rhythm accuracy, ear training, and musical interpretation, but I always connect those skills back to real music. I’ve seen that when students understand the relevance of what they’re learning, they’re far more motivated and excited to practice. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work has been mentoring students through their first public performances, whether it's an open mic night or a school recital. I also help students navigate stage fright and develop a confident stage presence. I believe music is as much about emotion as it is about accuracy, so I emphasize performance dynamics and emotional expression. I strive to provide not just lessons, but an environment of trust, curiosity, and growth where students can explore their full potential.

My method for teaching guitar combines structure with flexibility, discipline with inspiration, and skills with creativity. I believe in giving you a framework that’s strong and supportive—clear chord shapes, rhythm accuracy, right-hand/left-hand coordination—but I also believe that framework should be adaptable. Your musical tastes shape what we play, and your goals shape how we get there. Lessons aren’t just about covering material—they’re about uncovering your strengths and building confidence through consistent, thoughtful progress.

I use clear, simplified explanations to help you understand not just what to play but why it matters musically. Whether we’re exploring barre chords or syncopation, I always tie the concept to real music—songs you love or genres that resonate with you. I offer different tools depending on your learning style: fretboard diagrams, real-time jam sessions, rhythm visualization apps, video recordings of your progress, or ear-training games. Guitar should feel like a conversation between your hands, your ears, and your imagination—not just something you memorize.

I also integrate real-world musician case studies into our lessons. We might talk about how a session player develops timing, or how a singer-songwriter builds a solo set. This helps you see how your skills apply in the real world, and how others have grown through trial, error, and persistence. We also spend time on things like dynamic control, emotional expression, improvisation, building a song set, and preparing for a live performance—so when the moment comes, you’re not just technically ready, but mentally and musically prepared too.
