About James

I started studying Japanese back when I was 14 years old, and it seemed like I was hitting into a wall every time I tried to seriously study. I had the passion for learning Japanese all my life, but right when I would pour my soul into my dream, something would stop me. I bought all kinds of apps and online programs to learn Japanese, I used Duolingo for years, and I followed and subscribed to tons of people on YouTube, Instagram, and other social media. But the apps and online programs were all cash grabs to get my money. I didn't feel like I was making any progress on Duolingo. And I wasn't at a high enough level to understand what any YouTuber or social media page was talking about. I had almost completely given up on my dream. Maybe Japanese wasn't for me, I thought. Until one day when I met a substitute teacher of mine in my senior year of high school. She was fluent in Japanese and wanted to be my tutor. I wasn't any good at that time, but she saw something in me. Passion. And that passion turned into potential. THAT is why I want to tutor in Japanese. Because I know there are tons of people out there like me that have a dream, a love for Japanese and passion for the language and culture. I was then chosen to be a part of a full-time volunteer program to live in Japan for 2 years, teaching Japanese people English and foreigners Japanese, all while using and speaking the language every day! For those 2 years I've taught dozens of students and still keep in touch with them even now.

Hey! I'm James Christopherson and I've been studying Japanese for more than five years. I've also lived in Japan teaching both English and Japanese full time for 2 years. I typically teach beginning and low-intermediate level students, so if you're looking for real progress on your Japanese learning journey, you're in the right place! Let's face it. Most Japanese learning programs either have next to no content hidden behind a massive paywall, or the grammatical jargon is so much that it leaves you unmotivated to keep going. I'm here to make your language learning a more enjoyable, hands-on approach. For the most part, these lessons will be in conversational Japanese. Understanding what's being said and helping others understand what you're saying. Here's what you can expect from taking my class: Part 1. Learning the sounds of Japanese: This will come with learning 2 of the 3 major alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana. Part 2. Ear, brain, and mouth training: Japanese is a very quickly spoken language. It has around 7-8 syllables spoken PER SECOND! For any kind of comprehension on either side to happen, we'll go through some exercises. Part 3. Memorized Phrases: Simple things to say and hear like "I am from America" or "How do you say this in Japanese?" These phrases are CRUCIAL for starting on your language journey. Part 4. Sentence structure: This is where the magic happens! This is when all the ear training memorizing pays off. We'll learn the basic structures of what makes a sentence and your brain will put meaning behind the sounds you're making and hearing. When learning a language, there's a lot going on in your brain that's fighting against you. No matter how much passion you may have, it takes time for the brain to recognize unfamiliar sounds as something with meaning. It's not easy learning a language, but I've had training on how to keep yourself engaged. I've taught many beginners over the past couple years and the biggest payoff is when something just clicks and you understand. After that initial hump, learning the language becomes fun and exciting! You'll want to keep going! I'm here to help you get you past that initial hump into the "click." If you have any questions, feel free to contact me anytime. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
