About Sean

I am an experienced tutor and examiner with over 30 years of teaching Latin and Greek. I hold a BA from the University of York and a PhD from Middlesex University. I specialise in preparing students for Common Entrance, scholarship exams, GCSE, A-Level, and university-level study, and have helped many win scholarships to schools such as Eton, Westminster, and Harrow.

I currently teach in a Central London college and serve as an examiner for OCR in Latin and History. This gives me a detailed understanding of how students should approach exams and how to succeed.

I have written over 40 books, including a Latin and Greek textbook, and a report on education commissioned by the UK Government.

I hold an enhanced DBS certificate (on the update service) and full safeguarding qualifications. I always bring these to the first lesson.

About the lesson

I teach both beginners and advanced students in Latin and Greek, with particular expertise in preparing for the Common Entrance Examination and scholarship papers such as the King’s Scholarship at Eton, the Westminster Challenge, and the Harrow Entrance Examination.

Lessons are clear, structured, and results-focused. I draw on past papers, grammar drills, and carefully chosen adapted and original texts. This helps students master the rules of the language and apply them confidently — whether they are new to Latin or preparing for a top-tier scholarship.

Greek and Latin are rule-based, logical languages. My teaching builds fluency by helping students understand how the systems work, then reinforcing that knowledge through reading and translation. I also teach students to translate from English into Latin or Greek, a critical skill for exams and an excellent way to deepen grammatical understanding.

Every lesson is tailored to the student’s needs — no generic worksheets, no wasted time. Whether your child needs to build foundations or push for a scholarship, I offer an approach that is methodical, personalised, and proven to deliver results.
