About Linda

My teaching philosophy for saxophone centers on balancing technical mastery with personal expression, nurturing both skill and passion in each student. I believe that a solid technical foundation—breath control, embouchure strength, finger agility, rhythm accuracy, and articulation—is essential for any saxophonist to play with confidence and musicality. Early lessons focus on developing these skills systematically, with particular attention to tone quality and intonation, which are critical for ensemble and solo playing. However, technique alone cannot sustain a lifelong love of music, so I incorporate improvisation and creative exploration into every stage of learning. Using call-and-response exercises, scale patterns, and guided improvisation, I encourage students to develop their own musical voice and to understand music as a form of personal storytelling. Music theory is taught contextually, making connections between scales, chords, and progressions as they relate to the pieces and improvisations students work on, thereby deepening their comprehension and practical ability. I encourage students to explore diverse genres, from jazz and blues to pop and classical, tailoring lessons to their interests to keep motivation high. Goal-setting is collaborative and flexible, focusing on technical milestones, performance readiness, or creative projects, depending on each student's aspirations. One memorable success was guiding a beginner who struggled initially with breath control and sound production to becoming a confident performer capable of improvising over complex chord changes. My overarching goal is to help students become versatile, expressive saxophonists who feel empowered to pursue their musical passions with enthusiasm and skill.

Teaching saxophone is a deeply rewarding journey that I approach with a balance of technical precision and creative freedom. My philosophy centers on helping students build a strong, healthy foundation while encouraging their unique musical voices to flourish.

I begin by emphasizing essential fundamentals such as breath support, embouchure, posture, tone production, and finger technique, ensuring that students develop good habits that will sustain them through all styles and challenges. At the same time, I incorporate improvisation and expressive playing from early lessons, recognizing that music is ultimately about communication and storytelling.

I tailor each lesson to the individual’s musical tastes, whether they gravitate toward jazz, classical, pop, or blues, and I provide repertoire and exercises that inspire and challenge. Theory and aural skills are woven seamlessly into practice, helping students understand the language behind the music and empowering them to think creatively and independently.

I make extensive use of technology—recording devices, digital metronomes, tuners, and play-along tracks—to give immediate feedback and track progress in an interactive way. Performance experience is vital in my teaching; I encourage participation in recitals, school bands, and community ensembles to develop confidence, stage presence, and ensemble skills.

One of my proudest moments was seeing a student who once struggled with tone and breath control perform a flawless solo at a regional jazz festival, reflecting months of dedicated work and growth. Above all, my goal is to foster lifelong passion, curiosity, and musical independence so that students not only master the saxophone but find joy and fulfillment in the music they create.
