About Bethany
I am a PhD candidate in history, focusing on medical, drug and alcohol, women, and religious history in Canada and the United States. I hold Master's and Bachelor degrees in history, where my theses have focused on women, medical, and religious history. I am a passionate learner and teacher. When it comes to content, I want history to be engaging, accessible, and enjoyable. One of my favorite things about teaching is honing students' skills. I am passionate about grammar, citation styles, and organization. I enjoy editing others' work and helping them elevate their writing and argumentation to the next level. I love to research and write. My favorite thing about being a scholar is that I get to explore texts that no one else has seen in a century. I have read letters home from war, sermons, speeches, and newspaper articles, among many other things. When I'm not working, I enjoy reading, hiking, hanging out with my friends, and trying new foods. Thank you for considering me as your tutor!

As a PhD candidate in History with a strong foundation in both university and secondary-level teaching, I bring a dynamic, student-centred approach to tutoring that blends academic rigour with accessibility and enthusiasm for the subject. My methodology is rooted in clarity, adaptability, and fostering critical thinking, which are key skills not only for historical inquiry but for lifelong learning.
My teaching philosophy is anchored in dialogue and inquiry. I believe that history is best learned through active engagement, so ask guided questions that encourage students to think deeply, question assumptions, and articulate their understanding. This method helps develop analytical and interpretative skills, which are central to the discipline.
I also integrate a range of techniques tailored to different learning styles, including exploring primary sources to develop firsthand analytical skills; comparative analysis to situate topics in broader contexts to cultivate a global, interconnected understanding of historical processes; and visual techniques to make abstract or distant events vivid and memorable.
I emphasize skill-building—thesis development, essay structure, exam technique, and historiographical literacy—so that students become confident and independent thinkers.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Each lesson is structured to balance conceptual clarity with practical application. A standard 60-minute session might include:
Warm-up and Review (5–10 minutes): Revisiting prior material with a quick discussion to reinforce continuity.
Core Concept or Theme Introduction (15–20 minutes): Presenting a key topic or skill, with contextual framing and guiding questions.
Guided Practice (20 minutes): Working through a primary source, essay question, or historical problem together.
Independent Work (10–15 minutes): The student applies what they’ve learned with feedback, often culminating in a short written response or outline.
Wrap-up and Reflection (5 minutes): Consolidating learning, setting goals, and highlighting connections to future lessons.
When preparing university-level students, I may also assign reading or planning tasks between sessions to deepen engagement.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
My dual experience in both secondary and university-level higher education allows me to adapt flexibly to a wide range of learners and expectations. I understand the demands of academic writing at a high level, but I also know how to reach students who may be struggling with foundational concepts or motivation.
I bring a scholar’s depth and a teacher’s intuition: my lessons are intellectually rich but still accessible. I see each student not just as a learner but as a budding historian or critical thinker. My aim is to help students achieve academic success and instill a sense of curiosity and confidence.
Beyond content expertise, I offer empathetic, individualized support. I know that each student’s journey is unique, and I strive to create a space where they feel heard, challenged, and empowered.
Who the Lessons Are For:
I tutor a broad spectrum of learners, including:
University undergraduates, especially those in history, gender studies, international relations, or cultural studies, seeking support with coursework, writing, or exam prep.
High school students needing guidance on historical analysis, structured writing, and source evaluation.
Mature learners or aspiring postgraduates, preparing for graduate-level study or returning to academic work after time away.
I also have experience supporting students with diverse academic needs and backgrounds, including those with learning differences or those for whom English is an additional language.
