About the lesson
In my teaching practice, understanding is an important notion. It involves the capacity of the students to “grasp what they have been taught and try to figure out what it really means in the ‘big picture’." (Kibunya, 86) Naturally, such learning is not a piecemeal, fragmented process, but is a holistic, integrative process. In this sense, I find the method of creating thinking routines, developed by Harvard University’s School of Education, quite insightful. The steps to follow to create a thinking routine are: a) asking deep questions (think, puzzle, explore), b) making connections (connect or extend), c) generating explanations (claim, support), d) challenging ideas and shifting perspectives (identify and explore alternative points of view and try to explain the whys). What I like the most about this kind of approach is that it turns the students into active and self-conscious participants of the learning process. In sum, classes with diverse activities, interactions and assignments directly connected to the real life are what I seek when I teach a student, precisely because they not only promote an active role for the learner but also an authentic understanding of multiple phenomena at many levels.
