About Ed

I learned to play the Highland bagpipes as a young child. I was brought up with a half Scottish family and had lots of trips to Scotland to see relatives and also for holidays. Whenever I saw a bagpipe player I was fascinated and hypnotised by the sound. Eventually my parents found me a tutor and got me started with an excellent tutor. After 6 months of learning I joined a pipe band and after no time were performing with them at parades, festivals, and other events. I then went on to compete with several other bands and had great success on the competition circuit. As a solo piper I've performed at 1000's of weddings, funerals, birthday parties (including Sir Alex Ferguson's 80th). I've performed at events all over the UK and Europe and have achieved an outstanding reputation for my professionalism, reliability and piping skills. I've also had the honour of teaching the bagpipes to cadets in the Army Foundation College for over 9 years. I love teaching and passing my skills and knowledge on to others. I also enjoy playing the Scottish border pipes, attending folk sessions and playing along with other musicians.

About the lesson

I am a professional highland bagpiper with over 30 years' experience performing at 1000's of events in the UK and abroad. I've competed with pipe bands at the European and World Pipe Band Championships and won the All English Championships several times. I was the head bagpipe tutor at the army college in Harrogate for over 9 years where I taught classes of 16-18 year old cadets. I now mainly teach privately online and in person. I teach online via Zoom or Skype and I'm happy to teach children or adults. Beginners will learn on the practice chanter. I will teach how to play the scale, how to read music and how to play the many embellishments unique to highland bagpipe music. Beginners will learn their first tunes and develop a repertoire of traditional bagpipe music. I will also teach music theory and crucially... how to play along to a metronome. I will send instructional videos via Whatsapp or Youtube to complement lessons. For advanced players I can help with repertoire expansion, improving rhythm, perfecting gracenotes and finger technique, bagpipe maintenance, tuning, and blowing a steady tone, etc. My lessons are relaxed and fun. All you need to begin is a good quality practice chanter, i.e. McCallum's or David Nail and at least 20 minutes a day to practise in between lessons.

My 10 Yr old son started learning the bagpipes in January. He is thoroughly enjoying it and makes very good progress. We didn't know anything about bagpipes before, but Ed helped us so much to get the right Chanter and a suitable bagpipe for Finley. Ed is kind but determined with his teaching and Finley said:" I don't know why it's good, but it is just really good!"
Teaching the bagpipes doesn't seem to be only a job to Ed but a vocation- and that is rare these days.
