About Wesley
The first year I worked as a volunteer tutor with Reading Partners in Denver Colorado, I shared an award for tutor of the year with another teacher. I was very surprised, but I come from a family of teachers (my mom and both her sisters were school teachers) so maybe I learned some things from them. At Reading Partners we worked with students ages 6-10 who were behind in reading skills; about 1/2 the students were 2nd language learners. The purpose was to get them up to grade level in reading before they finished 4th grade. My favorite part of each 45 minute session is when the tutor reads a few pages aloud (sometimes in dramatic fashion) then the student reads a few pages aloud and the tutor asks them questions about what they heard and read.
I also tutored a 7th grade student from my church in math for a year and I really enjoyed that, probably because I am a numbers person (retired CPA).

I like to make learning fun, and I believe everyone can improve. To me, the best part of teaching is seeing the students learn a new skill or understand a new concept. When the 'light goes on', that makes all the effort worth it. I enjoy making up tests to make sure that the student has a thorough understanding of the material.
