About McGinnis
I grew up in a low-income household and worked hard to earn scholarships and admission to Georgia Southern University, where I studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea. My dedication and academic success ultimately led me to transfer to Georgetown University.
At Georgetown, my leadership roles as President of Scholars of Finance and President of First Generation Investors have given me extensive experience tutoring and mentoring students. In Scholars of Finance, I have guided over 40 members in achieving competitive internships at prestigious firms such as JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. In First Generation Investors, I have taught financial literacy to more than 80 high school students across three schools in the D.C. area.
I gained investment banking experience through an internship at a top global firm in New York and earned the opportunity to return full-time after graduation. However, I chose to dedicate myself to helping others achieve their goals. Since then, I have worked with students from diverse backgrounds, including an international student who earned admission to top universities such as Boston University and Duke.

In today’s age of AI, polished essays alone are no longer enough to stand out. The true differentiator is the ability to mine, refine, and showcase your authentic strengths, something no AI can replicate. I work closely with students to identify and develop the aspects of their story that will resonate most with admissions committees, ensuring their applications feel personal, purposeful, and unique.
My approach is less about listing what you have done and more about connecting the dots to show where you are going. We focus on creating a clear, future-focused vision that ties together your experiences, achievements, and goals into a compelling narrative. This process helps admissions officers see not only what you have accomplished, but also the potential and direction you bring to their institution.
A typical session begins with a progress update and review of materials, followed by targeted work on essays, interview preparation, or application strategy. I provide actionable feedback, proven techniques, and real-world examples so your materials are more than just well-written — they convey confidence, purpose, and a unique identity that sets you apart. By the time you submit, you will have an application that reflects your best self and maximizes your chances of success in the admissions process.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
I’ve known McGinnis for two years at Georgetown, and I couldn’t recommend him enough for career guidance. As a freshman hoping to break into corporate finance, I didn’t know where to begin, but he helped me structure my approach step by step, from organizing my outreach and building technical skills to understanding firm culture and learning how to tell my story. His advice was always practical and sincere. I still remember when he told me to approach interviews by asking why each opportunity mattered to me, which completely changed how I thought about recruiting. After speaking with many professionals and upperclassmen, I realized his advice helped me stand out by making my story more personal and grounded. I’m grateful for everything he’s done, and I know others will benefit just as much.
I met McGinnis early in my time at Georgetown, and he quickly became someone I trusted for honest, thoughtful guidance. One of our first real conversations was about what I wanted out of college, and from that point on, he helped me think through my personal, social, and professional goals in a way that felt specific and meaningful. What stood out most wasn’t just his experience, like transferring schools, leading organizations, or studying abroad, but how seriously he listened and how much he genuinely cared. He never just gives answers; he helps you ask the right questions and figure things out for yourself. He strikes a rare balance—someone who is experienced and professional, but also approachable and genuinely invested in your growth. I recommend him to anyone looking for perspective, clarity, and guidance they can trust.
McGinnis took a focused, individualized, and impactful approach to supporting me through a late-career job transition. With decades of experience behind me, I felt unsure of how to pivot into a new role that aligned with how I wanted to finish my career.
He helped me identify the traits that had made me successful over the years and showed me how to clearly communicate those strengths in a way that resonated with employers in a completely different industry. Talking about yourself is never easy, especially later in life, but McGinnis made it comfortable and effective.
I’m now three months into what I consider my twilight career, and I couldn’t be more pleased. I highly recommend working with McGinnis, whether you’re just starting out or making a major change like I did.McGinnis helped me apply to graduate programs in the U.S., and the experience was truly eye-opening. He helped me reflect on my motivations, identify meaningful experiences, and express myself with confidence, all while making the process much more enjoyable and less stressful.
He listens carefully and helps you turn your personal story into something unique and powerful. I not only got into the top schools I wanted (i.e., Duke, Boston University, and Northeastern), but I also developed skills I’ll use for future job applications and interviews.
If you want to stand out in a competitive admissions process and show why schools should choose you, McGinnis is the person to guide you.View more recommendations
