About Pooh Yin

My name is Bosun Chow, and I am an undergraduate in the Bachelor of Arts and Music program at Monash University, majoring in Composition & Music Technology and Philosophy.

I want to teach music theory because it opens up many possibilities and allows you to access different parts of music (especially complex ones) that you couldn’t without going through very difficult (and often failing) hurdles without.

With learning music theory you can save a lot of time by learning established musical practices without long hours of experimentation and toil, and it helps you with remembering them so you are allowed to priorities your music making instead of figuring out the theory to make them. It will also help you to communicate and articulate musical ideas efficiently with other people and musicians that are working with you in your musical journey.

Music theory is an important component in practicing music and communicating music. Often people find it hard to understanding certain concepts that hampers their musical journey but find music theory difficult and scary to approach, but it doesn’t need to be, and I am here to make it easier for you to grasp those concepts and help you flourish in your musical practice and journey.

Here is how I would teach:

1) I will get to know you and your musical aspirations/goals, so I can tailor lessons to your needs.

2) After the lesson, I will email you a summary of the lesson plus additional resources that would further help with what you have learnt in the lesson. If it requires, I will send you exercise to prompt you on practicing those music theory concepts.

3) I strongly focus on the application of music theory, through improvisation and/or composing mini pieces and songs. It is my belief and experience that through using what you have learnt in theory that you can fully understand them, and that’ll carry throughout your journey without fail.

4) it is highly recommended to have a musical instrument, a keyboard instrument is even better, because it helps you to have an immediate bodily relationship with music theory and it will help you learn with greater ease. The instrument doesn’t need to be expensive, a cheap 61-key electric keyboard is more than enough.

5) Have a music manuscript or printed out empty sheet music for notes. Alternatively, you can use a digital notation software, e.g. Musescore (it’s free!)

Any ages 5 and above can get tutored by me (Adults are allowed too!)

For now I am primarily focusing on delivering beginner lessons. But if you have any other lessons or questions in mind, please don’t hesitate to message me.
