About Olivier

Active club player and highly experienced instructor (over 1,000 hours of private lessons).

I have been passionate about chess for more than 10 years and love sharing my enthusiasm for the game.

2024 French Champion (Op D). Scored 8/9 at the 2024 French Chess Championship, remaining undefeated in 9 games. I rigorously apply the principles I teach.

I place great importance on methodology and structured learning, creating a personalized plan with my students based on their goals and learning abilities.

As an engineer by training and a Data Scientist by profession, I am rigorous, meticulous, and methodical in my approach.

In 2023, I earned the FIDE National Instructor (NI) title after completing a training program led by the renowned coach Iossif Dorfman.

I am also an active chess player, participating in both OTB tournaments and online games. I work with a variety of chess tools (chess platforms, ChessBase, Google Spreadsheets for lesson tracking, and a range of books for lesson content).

Find out more about Olivier

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started practicing more than 10 years ago when I (quite late) opened a book and became passionate about the discipline.

It was a gift from a friend that drew me in. I already knew how to move the pieces, but I had no idea about this fascinating world of strategy and tactics. Since then, I've never stopped!
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I think the great players of the past fascinate me even more than today's champions, because back then there were no computers. They had to prepare and improve without that help, which only amplifies my respect and admiration for them. I'm thinking especially of Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Tal, Botvinnik, Fischer, Kasparov-and I have a special appreciation for Euwe, who was also a great teacher.
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

I believe that pedagogy is even more important than chess level. Of course, you need a good understanding of the game, but the most important thing is being able to explain it and break it down for students-and that's one of my main strengths.

You also need to be patient and flexible. You have to tailor your content to the needs and goals of each student. What excites me is exactly that challenge: being able to adapt to every student and take on the mission of helping all my students climb toward ELO heights.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

When there's a difficulty, don't hesitate to break it down into small, digestible pieces. That's the secret key to accomplishing big projects-or progressing in chess. Improving in chess is especially tough because the journey is long and filled with obstacles, and the path upward is unclear and varies from person to person.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Personally, I find great fulfillment in teaching chess. I love sharing my knowledge with others, and at the same time, I help them improve. It's a very rewarding and enriching position to be in.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I'm extremely proud of my students and the lessons I'm currently giving. I have a 100% satisfaction rate, and I can proudly say I've never had a student disappointed in my lessons. They're interactive, all my students are making strong progress, and they're having fun during the sessions (which is also very important for keeping motivation high).
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Yes, I've often been surprised by students who've made tremendous progress. Most recently, I think of a student who gained 200 ELO points on a well-known online chess platform after just two lessons and a rigorous application of the advice I gave him.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

My secret is passion, patience, and the fact that I'm wholeheartedly dedicated to what I do. When you do it with passion, it shows-and it becomes a pleasure for both the student and the teacher. Everyone benefits and has a great time!
