My approach varies according to a student's needs and goals.
ESL STUDENTS
For example, ESL students often need to spend time learning the basics: phonics--letter/sound recognition, orthography and Dolch/Fry sight word lists. Your lesson might begin with a simple sounding out of the alphabet followed by 100 sight words and identifying what type of word you are looking at (noun? verb?) then creating a sentence to share with that word. The final few minutes might be spent reading out loud for fluency and comprehension with reading and writing assignments sent as homework.
My goal for ESL students is to give them the courage to engage in the process of learning and lose their fear of making mistakes, faltering or feeling foolish. This goal can be reached by giving them the fundamentals they too often miss in traditional ESL programs.
AP STUDENTS
Advanced students (AP) need to learn to read and write a lot more about what they read and then, how to write a lot less. Exercises that require ideas to be expanded to 1,000 words are then required to be condensed to 200 words. Comprehension is key at this level, and students would be expected to come with reading done. Considerable time would be spent on the parts of the major paper--titles, introductory paragraphs, opening/closing sentences, coherence and cohesion within the body text and so on. Time would always be spent on drills intended to improve thinking under pressure; e.g., given a subject, generate five titles between seven and 10 words each. Include a colon in the title.
My purpose is to get students to think about what they are reading, question the purpose of the text, and discover the techniques the author uses to convince the reader of its authenticity and legitimacy . . . and then how to debunk or bolster the argument as it has been presented.
I have discussed two quite different groups to illustrate the extent of my expertise and the unique methods I use in order to engage students and encourage them to take command of their language goals.
