I am a retired UBC professor of History, Chinese Studies and Comparative Religion with 31 years of teaching and tutoring experience, looking for a part-time job tutoring English in my Kerrisdale apartment or nearby. Native speaker of English; also speak fluent Mandarin Chinese and some Spanish. Ph.D, University of Chicago. Can adjust to student needs.
I can help you realize your English language goals for career or social advancement with lessons that are designed specifically for you. Some students need to develop their vocabulary in a very specific area such as travel, health care, finance, or technology.
The basis of my teaching is based on teaching concepts and definitions using a variety of problem-solving methods. Prepared students for CEMC Math Contest (Gauss, Pascal, etc.), SAT, ACT, GMAT. A dedicated person who wants to use his skills and education to help students achieve using traditional and modern approaches.
Usually, my classes are one-on-one as I like to focus on one student at a time. It helps me to understand where the student stands. I follow the course book that is used in the school. I provide them with alternative methods to approach a question, wherever possible.
Reflect on what being a Spanish teacher means and what language teaching consists of. Know the basic aspects involved in foreign language teaching/learning and the different methodological approaches. Acquire the tools, techniques and abilities to teach different skills. Manage group dynamics and interaction in the classroom.
I prefer to teach one-on-one. Having planned and conducted tutorials for groups of 20-25, I find that doing face-to-face work lets me understand my students' needs in a much more efficient manner. I also prefer to work via Skype/online, mostly due to travel constraints, though I'd be willing to negotiate this based on transport/distance. My classes are quite structured, but not rigid.
English can be my tool to teach Chinese. I will offer comprehensive Chinese teaching including reading, writing, listening and much on speaking. My aim is to make my students like native Chinese speakers. Of course, Chinese culture and history are an indispensable part of my teaching. If you visit China someday, please do let me be your tour guide and host.
My teaching methods are typically intended for elementary and high school learners. It includes demonstration, easy to learn methods of teaching-learning process, interactive games, practice test, knowledge test, which are highly recommended for students with individual differences. I am a very approachable and patient teacher.
My classes are hatha-based with some vinyasa elements sprinkled in throughout. As a teacher it is my intention to share this transformational practice with others so that each may (re)discover and explore their own innate power. I focus on a combination of movement, alignment, breathwork, and meditation, from a place of sincerity and authenticity.
My methodology is based in trust and comprehension in order to understand what's going on with the student motivation and why he needs extra lessons. First I learn about the student; what he or she likes and don't and what what do he or she wants and how they want it.
My teaching methods include guiding students through example problems and giving them the necessary tools to grasp the concept for similar problems. Occasionally, I use visual aids (diagrams, physical objects, graphs etc) to simplify a complex concept. My classes are targeted to students in elementary and high school (Grades 1-12).
I offer classes for all abilities and learning styles. My vast experience in teaching has developed my ability to successfully tailor lessons to each individual. My classes are very student focused. I'm friendly, approachable, down-to-earth. I pride myself in being an excellent communicator and I have a natural enthusiasm. My main objectives of teaching yoga are: fun and form.
It is imperative for students to be fully engaged. My teaching methods include focusing on conceptual foundations, developing a student’s own structure to understand, and providing real life examples, exercises and applications where relevant, all in a structured yet flexible approach.
I work with each student on an individualized basis to set personal goals and vary teaching approaches to meet the student's needs. I work with each student to develop gestured vocabulary cues, videos, games and exercises aimed toward the achievement of their personal goals.
I identify the profile of my students, their needs and how they areable to learn in order to help them.
My teaching methods are relatively flexible and simplistic. I know that each student learns differently and therefore I approach each lesson with an open mind and assess my students as they come.
Clear explanations and student engagement is the core of my teaching philosophy. In my opinion a good teacher communicates effectively the main topics and ideas of each lesson to students to motivate and equip them with the essential tools and courage to learn new topics through the lectures and on their own.
Mostly the Socratic method for the tutoring of individuals and small groups, I ask questions and then based on those questions we explore the concept you are trying to learn. If this is a long term tutoring position then I employ homework and exercises.
I use a lot of hands-on assignments. I believe the best way to learn is by doing it wrong, understanding why, and trying it again. Editing the work of others is also a great way to learn in groups, while editing your own work helps individual students learn. And above all else, a love of language and writing makes every lesson fun.
When tutoring students in English, I start with learning what the students want to learn or what level of proficiency they hope to achieve. Depending on the student's needs, I typically give 1-1.5 hour long lessons that consist of multiple activities and, if asked, I assign homework to be completed before the next lesson.
I structure my classes around the needs of the students using creativity, imagination and heart. I can suggest tools to use to make learning easier.
My teaching methods are focused in grammar, writing and speaking. Dynamic, well structured classes and adapted to the needs and goals for each student. Morevoer, I could give some tips to travel to my city, Barcelona, and teach you all vocabulary to be the best visitor in my country.
I focus more into the speaking expression, as grammar comes through it, I can explain the doubts people have on an specific topic and normally we'll do readings and songs and talk about everything and nothing to get the language fluency
My methods are completely based upon my personal experience and they continue to evolve as my students do as well. that being said right now i believe in three important factors which are first 1.the artist 2.the technician 3. the architect. All these three roles are important and i continually search for more.
My teaching methods often depend upon how much guidance my students need to help them reach their learning goals. For most of my lessons, I employ the Exploratory Strategy, because it gives my students agency over their own learning.
I am a practical teacher and I teach people starting at the skill level they are at. If you need help writing emails and reading the news, that is what we will practice. I like teaching with humour and using conversation to enrich our lessons.
I adapt to my students needs. There are many ways to learn and many ways to teach. We will find the one that works better for you and your goals. Together, we will find the strategy that suits your needs.
My teaching method consists of a one-on-one continual assessment of the student's progress. I like to understand how the person best learns and their skill level to start, and then implement a learning plan incorporating that information. A typical class includes grammar, written and conversational English.
My educational philosophy is to teach in a holistic setting, to understand the child as a whole entity. I teach beyond the classroom, that all aspects of life are interconnected. A positive classroom environment is based on strong classroom management. I trust, respect and learn from my students with clear communication and expectations.
From French culture/history to grammar, vocabulary, ora-written comprehension or expression, I can give different lessons that would encompass everything. Or if you have a good level in French, we can grab a coffee and talk in French. I'm very patient and I'd love to help you to improve your french.
