About Elizabeth
Teaching saxophone has been a rewarding journey that has allowed me to work with students from diverse backgrounds and skill levels, helping each one discover their unique musical voice. I believe that saxophone playing is a balance between precise technique and heartfelt expression, so my lessons always focus on cultivating both. Early on, I prioritize breath control, embouchure development, posture, and finger coordination, ensuring students build a healthy, sustainable sound. Tone quality is a central focus—students learn not only how to produce clear notes but also how to shape their sound through vibrato, dynamics, and phrasing. I introduce articulation and intonation exercises to help them play confidently in ensembles and solos. Creativity is encouraged through improvisation from the start, using games and exercises tailored to their level to build musical fluency. Music theory is integrated naturally and practically, connecting concepts directly to the pieces or improvisations they’re working on. I encourage students to select repertoire that motivates them, whether that be jazz standards, pop songs, or classical pieces, making lessons relevant and enjoyable. Goal setting is a key part of our process, helping students prepare for performances, auditions, or personal milestones. One of my proudest moments was working with a young student who, initially intimidated by jazz improvisation, gradually gained confidence and started to develop their own style. Witnessing their progress reinforced the power of patience, encouragement, and tailored teaching. Ultimately, my goal is to foster saxophonists who are technically skilled, musically adventurous, and deeply connected to their art.

My saxophone teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music is a universal language that transcends boundaries and connects us all. I aim to create a learning environment where students feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and grow. From the outset, I emphasize the importance of sound production, focusing on breath support, embouchure, and tone quality. These foundational elements are crucial for developing a rich, resonant sound and for building the technical skills necessary to tackle more complex pieces. I also introduce students to the fundamentals of music theory, helping them understand the structure and language of music.
This knowledge empowers them to interpret and perform music with greater insight and expression. Recognizing that each student has unique learning needs and goals, I tailor my lessons to suit their individual preferences and aspirations. Whether a student is interested in classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, or contemporary pop music, I strive to provide repertoire that aligns with their interests while challenging them to grow. I believe in the power of performance to build confidence and musicality. I encourage students to participate in recitals and ensembles, providing opportunities to showcase their progress and to learn from others. Technology is an integral part of my teaching approach.
I incorporate digital tools such as recording software, metronomes, and tuners to facilitate practice and to provide students with immediate feedback. These tools help students develop a more critical ear and a deeper understanding of their playing. Ultimately, my goal is to instill in students a lifelong love for music, a strong sense of discipline, and the confidence to express themselves through their instrument.
