“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela

Parents are struggling to keep up with the children’s schoolwork, especially with lockdowns, restrictions, and school closures.

2020 forced a lot of students to change the way they did their schoolwork and their homework and with students unable to speak with their teachers face-to-face, those that were struggling ran the risk of ending up in even more difficulty.

E-learning became much more common in 2020, too, with many schools, universities, and training centres moved away from the classroom.

Today, there are many solutions from clever start-ups to help students adjust to the changes. However, with so many, it can be difficult to work out which options are the best for you and your children.

Here are a few useful websites, apps, and digital resources to help with schoolwork and homework. Of course, if you find any other useful resources, you can let us know about them in the comments!

GCSE Bitesize

Every student studying their GCSEs should immediately save this website in their favourites folder. This free website from the BBC is one of the best and has a lot of high-quality content on subjects including maths, English, science, and many others.

Parents will be happy to know that it's completely free and there's nothing behind a paywall. Writers regularly update the service to ensure that it covers the latest GCSE exams and the different exam boards offering the qualifications.

The only real downside to this website is that because it's so focused on GCSEs, there's not much that doesn't relate to those exams on it. Still, there's plenty of information to be had...

DuoLingo

This is one of the most popular language-learning apps and websites around and while there are certainly some drawbacks to it such as some of the weird sentences that it may teach you, for things like conjugations and vocabulary, this is something you can regularly use to bolster your language studies at school.

With encouraging pings and a colourful layout, the app is very engaging and can help students learning languages at a lower level to study aspects of their new language while waiting for a bus, between lessons, or during an ad-break while watching their favourite shows.

Natural History Museum

For curious minds, the website of the Natural History Museum is an entertaining website for children, especially when restrictions and lockdowns are stopping you from taking them to museums as often as you'd like.

There are virtual tours given by David Attenborough, downloadable activities and lessons plans, and a Dino Directory that we know will be a favourite of a lot of children and adults alike.

There's also an excellent Try this at home section filled with awesome educational activities and projects that younger children can do in their spare time.

Revision World

For those who need help with their homework, coursework, or revising for GCSEs or A Levels, Revision World is probably one of the best websites to visit.

The website offers academic resources for GCSE and A Level students as well resources for creating revision timetables and forums where students can look for help with their homework, assignments, and revision.

You can also practise for your exams by downloading a past paper and sitting a mock exam in your own home. As your exams approach, you'll want to be doing more

StudyWise

StudyWise is an excellent website for GCSE and A Level students and while there are resources and links to other useful sites for students, the forum will probably be best for students needing help with homework or their studies.

On StudyWise, the forum is under the "help" button as it's a forum dedicated to posting and answering questions. If you have any problems about GCSEs, A Levels, revision, or student life, you can ask it here. Of course, if you have the answer to somebody else's questions, you can also leave an answer for them.

National Geographic

The National Geographic Classroom Resources section is full of things that will keep students interested. If they're looking for ideas for a history project on a topic, this is a great website as it has everything from profiles on famous people to studies on climate change.

It's also an excellent resource for project research as it has plenty of encyclopedia entries, articles, and the type of world-class photography that you'd expect from National Geographic.

You can also filter the content by type and the subjects they cover, allowing you to quickly and effectively gather resources. Parents can use this to put together interesting lessons for their kids whilst at home or students can use it for their own independent research and learning.

This is definitely a website worth keeping in your favourites bar.

If you need more help with your homework than these websites can offer, consider enlisting the services of a private homework help tutor. Not only will a tutor be able to point you in the right direction for useful homework resources, but they'll also be able to help you or your child get the most out of your homework and assignments.

After all, homework is only useful when it helps you to consolidate the knowledge from your classes in school. Homework should be an opportunity to get the most out of what you've been taught in school, prepare you for exams or upcoming classes, and help you to get the best results.

Whether you're in school, college, or university, a tutor can help you with your writing, assignments, study techniques, or reading. There are also tutors that specialise in specific subjects so whether you're struggling with English, maths, science, or any other subjects, use private tutoring to get the grades you deserve.

There are thousands of tutors on Superprof offering tuition in academic subjects, arts and crafts, foreign languages, musical instruments, and even study skills and homework help so you're bound to find one to help you out.

You can get face-to-face tuition, online tuition, or even group tuition. Each type of lesson comes with its pros and cons so think carefully about which will work best for you, your preferred learning style, and your budget.

Face-to-face tuition is usually the most expensive but since the lessons are just between the tutor and the tutor, you can guarantee every minute will be spent focusing on them, making it also the most cost-effective type of tutoring.

Online tutorials tend to be cheaper than face-to-face tutorials as the tutor doesn't need to worry as much about travel costs and can schedule more lessons each week. While there are some drawbacks with hands-on subjects, for most school subjects, online tutoring can be just as effective as face-to-face lessons.

Group tutorials are an excellent choice for those on a tight budget. While you can't guarantee the lessons are tailored to you, you can enjoy learning with others and can split the cost of the tutor's time with the other students in the lesson.

Fortunately, a lot of tutors on Superprof offer the first lesson for free so you can try out several different tutors and learning approaches before picking the one that's right for you.
