A lot of us spend countless hours on a computer in Canada. Whether it's for school, work or just for our free time. By being on the computer for so many hours, we start to get better at using it. Typing is something we have to do on the computer. In school, it's typing up essays or assignments, or for work, it's typing out reports.

It takes some time to type things out, not to mention it takes longer to make mistakes and fuss with the keys. This happens more often than not, but it just takes practice getting better a typing. The better you get a typing, the faster you'll be able to type. You'll be able to finish things in half the time. Having a fast typing speed can also be the perfect skill to put on a job application. Most jobs that require you to use a computer are looking for someone to type a certain amount of words per minute.

How to Type Faster?

Several things can improve typing. The big thing in typing is body positing. From posture to hand placement, they all are important when learning to type faster. For the most part, we were all taught how to type a certain way, but we started to develop bad typing habits. These could be not using all of our fingers to slouching when at the computer. These all lead to slower typing speeds. Here are some things to keep in mind for those who want to work on typing speeds.

Posture

You shouldn't be slouched at the computer. It's going to cause bad posture, and it makes you type slower. It would help if you also started typing at a desk, whether it's a standing or sitting desk. Typing on the couch is terrible posture and doesn't help your typing.

Sitting properly with a laptop can cause some difficulties because you have to look down. Still, you can buy laptop stands that position them at the right height, keeping your head from looking down. It would help if you also had a sturdy chair with solid back support. You don't want to be leaning back or forward.

Hands

Your hands want to feel comfortable typing. They should be able to move freely and comfortably as you type. If your desk is too high, you'll be straining to try to keep them up, and too low, you will develop bad posture.

Using Both Hands

All your fingers should be involved on the keyboard. Typing with one or two fingers may feel more accessible, but it's not practical. Positioning your hands on the keyboard properly will easily allow you to increase your typing speeds. Each finger is responsible for specific keys. Your hands should also stay on the left or right side. Your left hand should not hit keys that are in the right. Let your right do this. Using both hands with the appropriate key does take time to learn, but after, you'll be glad you did.

Get Comfortable with One Keyboard

It may seem like common sense to only use one keyboard, but nowadays, it's not uncommon for a household in Canada to have multiple computers. Plus, at work, you also may use a different computer. Constantly switching from different keyboards can negatively impact your typing. Different models or systems of computers will have different keyboards. The keys could be spaced, raised, or bigger compared to another keyboard. Try only to use one keyboard for typing.

Your fingers will get more comfortable. Even if you're proficient at one keyboard, when you start using a different keyboard, you'll make mistakes and miss keys. Not all keyboards are the same so, keep that in mind when practicing.

Look Away From The Keyboard to Type Faster

Often when someone is efficient on the keyboard, you’ll see them not looking at the keys. Of course, this will be an effective way to type since you can look at your typing instead of looking at the keys and then at the screen, but it takes time to get here.

You’ll eventually be able to not look at the keyboard, but this isn't how you will learn. Start by practicing by looking at the keys when you type. You’ll naturally get more comfortable with your fingers and hand placement; then, you can move away from looking at the screen.

The main goal of typing is to type efficiently. This means your making as few mistakes as possible. If you practice looking away from the keyboard, you’ll run into problems. Learn the mechanics before trying to look away.

Resources to Type Faster

There several resources and practice exercises to type faster. We'll list 3 of the most common ways you can learn to type faster. Learning to type faster can be relatively quick with the amount of time we all spend on the computer; you can start practicing as long as you're learning right away.

Typing faster also comes with experience. If you think about the first time you used a keyboard to now, you've made some improvements. These resources above can ensure you learn to type faster quicker instead of slowly getting better over time. You have to be willing to put in some effort to increase your typing speeds.

Typing Faster Is Possible

It can be frustrating to learn to type faster. You will continually make mistakes, but that's all part of learning. It just takes some practice, and you'll be typing faster in no time. When you first start learning, create a baseline. Figure out how fast you can type. There are several tests online. After weeks of practicing, retake the same test. It’s a good way to ensure you’ve made improvements.

It doesn’t take long to improve your typing speeds, especially once you start learning proper mechanics in typing. Remember, you don't need to practice typing for a long time. Even a few minutes a day, you’ll see an improvement. Start practicing today, and you'll be on the path to improving your typing speeds. You'll have a skill that will last you a lifetime.

You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
