Provincial testing can cause anxiety for students of all ages across Canada, and the grade 10 literacy test in British Columbia is no exception. The Graduation Literacy Assessment, or GLA, is one of 3 tests BC secondary school students must take as part of the new curriculum. While the test does not impact your English class marks, nor is it considered by universities and colleges during the admissions process, passing it is a requirement for high school.

With graduation on the line - and the possibility of taking the test multiple times - it’s unsurprising that many students choose to hire a tutor to prepare. Hiring a tutor for a test is far from being a novel thing, with so many high-stakes tests that require a different type of study than taking a regular test or exam. English language and literacy tests assess the ability of students to decode texts, make inferences, communicate opinions, ideas and summaries. To be successful on such tests, you will need to exercise your skills as a reader and a writer, rather than studying and memorizing concepts as you might in History or Science.

The BC literacy test is not the only test students take to demonstrate their command of the English language. Many English language learners that need to show their proficiency in English to apply for postsecondary schools, visas, or even jobs take tests like the IELTS, TOEFL, CELPIP, or Cambridge exams for a fee. These tests assess the level of English proficiency you have if English is not your first language, and show whether or not you have the communication skills it takes to be successful in different academic or professional work environments. Because such tests are expensive to take and are prerequisite for so many career and academic pathways, students will often take a course to prepare for the test or hire a tutor to help. tutors will do the work of ensuring test-takers have the right knowledge and strategies in place to be successful on the test.

Unlike English proficiency tests, the BC provincial literacy tests assess the language skills of all students - not just English language learners - to see if students have the reading comprehension and written communication skills to be successful in and outside of the classroom. For this test, a tutor can play a similar role in preparing you to pass.

If you are wondering whether or not a tutor will be useful to you, you have come to the right place. This article explores the ways a tutor can help you succeed on the grade 10 literacy test in BC, and what you can do as a student to ensure you write the best test possible. But first, let’s take a closer look at some of the preparation you have already done simply by taking your English and Language Arts classes.

Why are English Courses so Important?

Your English classes are some of the most important classes you will take in elementary and secondary school. You may be wondering why English classes are so important if you already know how to speak the language. But the truth is we use language in so many ways beyond conversations, everyday interactions, and our consumption of news and media. We use our literacy skills to think critically, express our ideas clearly, make inferences, appreciate literature, and acquire knowledge - just to name a handful of uses. English classes are a prerequisite for nearly every university program, highlighting how important it is to have academic communication skills.

English classes play a key role in helping us develop the skills of analysis and communication that we will use long into adulthood in nearly every line of work. While you sometimes may feel like you are engaging in purely fun novel studies or simply having a blast role-playing your favourite character in a novel during class, you are actually building a foundation of skills that will enable you to obtain knowledge in an endless array of disciplines and interests.

Your English teachers can be some of the most important educators in the school. They help you practice and build skills of analysis and inference making, and provide you with feedback to help you improve your writing and presentation skills. While it may not seem like the ‘heaviest’ subject, the learning you do in English will likely have the most cross disciplinary field as reading and communication skills are required for nearly every area of learning.

As far as provincial testing is concerned, your English classes are essential to building the base of literacy you need to be successful on the test. The test essentially assesses the skills you have acquired and developed throughout elementary school and high school. If English or Language Arts has always been a strong suit for you, you will likely have an easier time preparing for and passing the test. If those English classes have been your least favourite - you may want to take some extra time and effort to ensure you are as prepared as possible for the test.

What is On the Grade 10 Literacy Test?

The BC grade 10 literacy test consists of 3 parts: A, B and C.

Part A of the test assesses the student’s ability to comprehend information in texts. Test takers will be presented with a number of traditional and new media next, such as stories, news articles, blogs, or infographics. The questions will require you to share your understanding of the texts, making appropriate references and explanations. Some questions will ask for a short paragraph, while other will be a multiple select format.

Part B is all about showing how well you communicate your own connections to a text. You will ultimately produce a piece of writing where you will explore your connections and responses. You can choose from two options: literacy for information and literacy for expression. Both options will be equal in terms of rigour, so your best bet is to choose which area interests you most. The literacy for information option will ask you to respond to a contemporary issue presented through a variety of non-fiction texts. The literacy for expression option will ask you to evaluate and respond to artistic expression shown through different media.

Finally, Part C is a section for reflecting on your work during the test. You will reflect and comment on what you feel are your strengths, the processes you used to prepare and finish the test, and how well you think you responded. This section will not be assessed or graded.

Will a Tutor or an English Teacher Online Help with the Literacy Test?

Students that want to prepare thoroughly for the literacy test or must take it again will want to consider hiring an English teacher or tutor online to support them. Online tutoring is one of the most popular learning options right now, thanks to the increasing amounts of video platforms that can be used for teaching and learning, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Online tutoring is convenient, effective, and much more time and cost efficient than meeting a teacher in person for extra help.

Here are our top reasons why we think you should hire a tutor to help you prepare for the grade 10  literacy test.

Get Targeted Support

Your regular English classes do a great job of teaching a large group literacy skills and providing new learning challenges, but a tutor can give you the targeted literacy help you need to address your individual needs. One-size-fits all instruction has its limits, and with class sizes getting increasingly larger, you may not always get the individualized support you need to improve your reading and writing.

With a private English tutor or teacher, you can get meaningful and detailed feedback on your writing and reading comprehension work. If using grammar to add variety to your sentences is a skill you want to work on, a private tutor can do just that. If you are struggling to understand the ideas in a challenging novel or text, a tutor can walk you through the vocabulary and ideas you need to focus on to make meaning and inferences. Have a big essay or paper coming up? A tutor can help you through the writing process and provide you with writing advice every step of the way.

When it comes to the literacy test, you may be concerned that you need to work on an area of literacy or simply your test taking techniques. A tutor can diagnose your strengths and weaknesses, target the areas you need most, and ensure that you have the transition words and practice you need to write the best answers and get the highest scores you can.

Someone to Hold You Accountable for Test Preparation

Preparing for any test takes discipline, and a tutor can do the hard work of holding you accountable to preparing and practicing for the literacy test that are hard to do on your own. Let’s face it, studying alone can be hard, especially if you are easily distracted by other things like TV, video games, or even your other subjects.

Having regular sessions with a tutor before the literacy test will ensure that you are being held accountable to putting in the time and practice to prepare. A tutor can develop a test preparation schedule for you, and use their time with you to complete practice questions and exercises.

Parents will love that a tutor takes the pressure off them to get their child to study: raising teens can be tough, and it can be an uphill battle to work with them. Having a trained educator that understands how kids learn can be incredibly helpful for families that want a more stress-free approach to test prep.

Who knows - if you or your child needs help in other subjects, perhaps you can continue working with the tutor to get help in other subjects!
