Is it Better to take Online Math Courses or Learn Mathematics in Person?

With so much learning taking place online these days, many students are left wondering whether or not it may even be better than attending in-person school. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of both options?

Taking In-Person Math Courses

Traditional math classes where you attend school and listen to live instruction from a teacher among classmates still has a lot of advantages for learners. First of all, you have the benefit of having a teacher observe your work and reactions to their instruction, which is surprisingly impactful. Good math teachers will watch their students closely to gauge understanding, taking the time to walk through the room and adjust their lessons based on the body language and work of the class.

In person instruction is also highly effective in that you can learn in a highly social, interactive environment with other students. You can make friends that stay with you for years, easily form study groups, and benefit from collaborating with each other. Let’s not forget how nice it can be to have some routine in your life outside of the home, and a reason to get dressed and be out all day. Learning from home can be isolating, and sometimes being out for a class or school all day can add shape and meaning to daily life.

Taking Online Math Courses

Online math courses are great for anyone who actually prefers staying at home all day, requires flexibility in their lives due to work or family responsibility, or simply likes learning in an online environment. When we learn virtually we save loads of time taking the bus, driving, or walking to classes. We can sleep a bit longer, and have access to all the amenities of home. If you have a job, online courses give a level of flexibility that enables you to get everything done. Virtual instruction has greatly improved lately, with video call platforms that have fewer glitches and better access to instructional tools for teachers. You may receive a high quality of instruction online.

So what are the downsides? Online learning can feel isolating, as you will likely only connect with your classmates if you have a relationship with them outside of the class or have a specific reason to call them. Your teacher cannot observe you closely, and sometimes instruction can be difficult to follow without the added dimension of interaction or body language.

What to Expect in High School Math?

High school math for Alberta students follows a fairly straightforward pathway for students who are planning for different careers. In Alberta, high school courses start at grade 10, where students start taking 10-level courses, followed by “20” and “30” levels for each following year of high school.

The Alberta high school math curriculum offers math courses for students who are university, college and workplace bound. There are academic stream courses that prepare students for math or math related degrees in university, focusing on more abstract concepts like trigonometry, equations, graphing and derivatives. Many of these students will take the Mathematics 31 course, which is prerequisite for many university math programs related to math.

Separate streams of courses are for students who wish to learn math but may not be pursuing study of the subject in university. There are also courses for students who want to learn essential math skills for employability and work. Students that start in a non ‘academic’ stream do have options to switch to the academic pathway should they want to.

Is Math Easy in University?

Math is far from easy in university, and can be one of the most challenging disciplines to undertake in your academic study. University math is typically advanced, going far beyond the realm of performing operations and solving equations. Most courses are focused on calculus, trigonometry, linear algebra, analysis, ring theory, differential equations and more. If you are studying a math related subject, like finance or the sciences, you will find math courses that are specifically adapted for those disciplines.

Below is a list of some of the math courses you will see at a school like the University of Alberta:

  • Advanced Mathematical Finance
  • Abstract Harmonic Analysis
  • Functional Analysis
  • Rings and Modules
  • Mathematic Modelling in Industry, Government and Sciences
  • Mathematical Biology
  • Measure Theory
  • Fourier Analysis
  • Algebraic Topology
