There is something special about living and learning in a university town, and Windsor is a place where you can truly have a unique and memorable university experience. Windsor has all the things students look for when they look for a place to study full time and a whole bunch of extras. Located at the border crossing between Michigan and Ontario, Windsor is a small city that packs lots of international punch.

Windsor students love the fact that it has affordable housing, as well as world-class learning at the University of Windsor, St. Clair College, and College Boreal. The small downtown oozes with charm, with turn-of-the century industrial buildings, and charming century homes in historic Walkerville. There are great pubs and cozy restaurants, and if you are looking for some big-city adventures downtown Detroit merely minutes away. There isn’t another small town in Ontario where you can truly enjoy the closeness of small town living with the spectacular views and amenities that come with having a beautiful metropolis literally across the river.

Windsor residents also boast that they have access to beautiful lakeside beaches and even some wineries in Kingsville, which is a short drive away. Point Pelee National Park is a must-see for anyone that wants to see a geographically important site: its sandy tip is the southernmost point of Canada and you’ll also love its spectacular boardwalk trails and natural hikes.

Now that we’ve established that Windsor is the place to be, let’s get serious and bring the topic back to math classes. Math students in Windsor will find fantastic options for math study at the University of Windsor, where students can complete bachelors programs in mathematics, computer science, statistics, business, and education. Those who want to take their math studies to the next level will find a challenging program in the Master’s of Actuarial Science Program.

Of course, you can also find high school math credits at the Windsor-Essex District School board, or course options in the city’s community colleges.

In-Person or Online Math Courses?

One question a lot of math students have is whether not to take online or in-person math courses. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Why would one be better than another?

In-Person Math Classes

Taking classes in-person has become a bit of a luxury lately, with so many schools being shut down in recent years due to the pandemic. In person math classes have a lot of advantages for learners: you can build relationships more easily with your teacher and classmates, can learn with all the context that live instruction and body language brings, and have a learning experience that keeps your eyes off the screen. Like anything in person, it’s nice to get out of your home environment and be out in the world, rather than feeling trapped at home. If you prefer having more of a social life and like the stimulation of having an instructor in front of you, then in-person math classes may be right for you.

Online Math Learning

Online math learning has a lot of advantages for learners, especially those with a busy schedule or a part/full time job. Learning virtually has truly evolved over the last couple of years as students became increasingly reliant on live streaming platforms and digital tools to attend school. There are so many great instructional tools that can be used in a virtual classroom. Of course, the biggest benefit is you can learn from wherever you are, as long as you have a good wifi connection. It can feel extremely comfortable to have zero commuting in the morning, sleep in a bit longer, and be in class with a few clicks.

Whichever type of format you prefer, remember to choose the format of course based on your own strengths and preferences.

How Can I Be Successful in Math Class?

Establish Strong Study Habits

To be successful in math class, especially at the secondary and postsecondary levels, you will want to have excellent study habits in place. To develop strong math skills, you need to attend class regularly so you don’t miss any instruction, and make time to review new learning. A lot of math applications and problem solving require you to practice frequently, so you will need the discipline to do your homework regularly or take initiative to do extra practice.

Another great habit to have in place at the postsecondary level is to attend all your tutorials and make the most of any extra support your university offers. Many schools will offer academic support and tutorial sessions where you will meet in small groups with a teaching assistant who can clarify complex concepts and will answer any questions. Like any university course, no one will be forcing you or calling home if you don’t show up - so always follow a rule of thumb that attending class is not optional unless of course, you are unwell.

Maintain Your Enthusiasm for Math

Make an effort to maintain your enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics. Yes, it can be hard when it is the subject that stresses you out most, but remember that math can be fun. Take some time  out of your busy class schedule to do math based activities that you enjoy, whether it is creating art, coding, playing sudoku, solving puzzles, or exploring a book of brainteasers. Always stay in touch with what inspired you to study math or a math adjacent field so you can stay focused and positive.

Seek Support from Your Peers

Our classmates are often a great source of knowledge and advice, and it never hurts to consult with them if you have questions about what you are both learning in class. Sometimes even hearing or seeing them do the same work you are doing can be eye-opening, as every student will be bringing their own background knowledge and experiences to a classroom.

Use social media to set up study groups and meetups so you can actually have some social time while working. Your university library will likely have lots of rooms you can book out for your group so you can be somewhere safe, focused and common to everyone. Of course, there are few things that are more fun than hanging out after a study session for some food and drinks!

Take Care of Yourself

One of the most important things you can do to be successful in school is to take care of yourself and stay healthy and fit. Make sure you get plenty of sleep every night, hydrate often, make time to exercise and take walks, and eat healthy. Your mind and body are interconnected, and sometimes when you are in good physical form, you will be better adjusted for long periods of study.

Find out where your school’s gyms are and make time to work out and get some cardio in so you can get lots of oxygen pumping to your brain. Your body will love not having to sit in front of a computer for a long time, and it can be incredibly refreshing to be away from your smart phone. Even something as simple as walking can be helpful: since you are in Windsor, why not take a walk down the beautiful riverfront!

Remember that Mental Health Matters

Being aware of our mental health and stress levels is really important when we are in school full time. Make sure you are monitoring your stress and anxiety, and seeking help from professionals if you need it. Your university or college should have lots of options or places you can go to for support, or can connect you with a school counsellor or therapist free of charge.

University can be a stressful and isolating time as students may be far from their family and the comforts of home. Call a parent, a sibling, or an old friend if you feel homesick or sad, and plan a trip home if possible to make yourself feel better.
