Of all the social networks on the web, Pinterest is probably the one that you haven’t heard of, especially if you don’t search for images very often. With 250 million users, however, this network is in the top 10 most used of 2018. The principle is simple, share photos. The users pin photos and create a photo album. Pinterest defines itself as an inspiration search engine. However, Pinterest is also a huge social media platform that can be used for content marketing and creating a professional network. Pinterest is a social network that’s both professional and personal. In this article, Superprof is looking at Pinterest, how to create an account, how to use the network, how to add photos, etc.
What Is Pinterest Most Used For?
Whether you are an individual using the World Wide Web for personal inspiration or a business owner looking to secure your future in an industry largely dictated by technology and trends, Pinterest is something that you should take note of. Now!
Where is the first place you look when you want some inspiration on how to decorate your living space or bedroom? Do you go straight to Debenhams or John Lewis to look at fabrics and curtains or to the DIY store in search of the perfect paint colour? Any Pinterest fan will tell you that the only place to go is onto the Pinterest app and to type in your keywords. And, if you haven't used Pinterest before, you will never look back from this moment on! A simple search of 'living room decor' or, more specifically 'blue and yellow living rooms', for example, will reveal hundreds and hundreds of related images for you to scroll through, many of which are linked up to the relevant suppliers so that you can immediately purchase what you see.

This is why influencers and celebrities play a big part in the high street fashion industry. Upon leaving the island, Love Island stars Molly-Mae, Maura and the show's winner Amber, were all snapped up by big-time fashion brands such as Boohoo.com and Pretty Little Thing, which means that anything they model will most likely sell out in hours on the brands' websites. Pinterest is an amazing tool for these fashion brands because as well as having social media sites to thank for showcasing their brands, they can also place adverts on Pinterest feeds or add links to any related material that people engage with as they scroll through images.

It doesn't matter if you already use your Pinterest account for recipes or hairstyles, you can still organise your thoughts regarding your wedding by using different boards. In fact, the more boards you have, the better as it means you are compartmentalising your thoughts. On your master wedding board, you'll pin anything and everything that you would love for your wedding: wedding inspiration, colour palettes, flowers, dresses, suits, invitation ideas, calligraphy, venues, wedding photos, honeymoon ideas, and much more! With a year or more to plan a wedding, in most cases, you can continue collecting ideas like this until it's time to make decisions and tighten up your wedding plans. Creating and Modifying an Account on Pinterest
The first step to creating an account on this new network is heading to the website. From there, you can create a personal or professional account. You’ll then need to provide some information:
- A valid email address
- A password
- Your age
You’ll then be able to create your account. If you choose to connect through Facebook or Gmail, your name will be saved. You’ll be asked to choose 5 interests and they’ll become the first things you follow. Pinterest will suggest content related to your interests. You can change these later. Now that your account has been created, you’ll find yourself on Pinterest’s homepage. At the top, there’s a search bar to help you find content. In the corner, there are a few different functions. You can click on the three dots to do the following:
- Change your profile photo
- Change your name
- Change your username
- Change your bio
- Change your location

Finding Content and Pinning It
Now that you’ve got your profile configured and personalised, you can dive into the world of Pinterest. Using the platform isn’t complicated. From the homepage, you’ll see a whole heap of photos related to your interests. You can search for specific things, too. Type a word into the search and wait for Pinterest to generate a whole heap of photos and images that other users have contributed to the network. That’s how you find the content you like. When you find something you like, you can pin it by clicking the pin icon. You’ll have six choices of what to do:
- Send: Share the photo or image on other social networks like Facebook, Twitter, etc. or via WhatsApp or Gmail, for example.
- Save: Save the photo or image to a board.
- Three dots: Report the content as inappropriate or pin it to a site or blog.
- Commentaries: See what other users have said about it
- Visit: Go to where the image was pinned from.
- Visual search: Search by visually similar images.
Once you’ve pinned an image, it’ll appear in your boards, the photo albums where you can see saved images. You need to create a board first, give it a title, and decide whether it’s public or not. In the Pins tab, you’ll find the images that you’ve saved from Pinterest. These are personal images. You can also add a Pin It button to your web browser so that you can quickly pin or repin content to your pinboard even when you're not on the website itself.
Posting Your Own Images and Photos
While you can create boards from other users’ photos and images, you can also add your own photos and images. After creating a board, you just have to click on the “Add a Pin” button which will allow you to add an image from a site or your computer. For your own images, choose the destination from your computer and then confirm. For images online, you’ll need the image’s URL. You’ll be able to add a description before you pin it. Well done! You’ve just added your first pin to a board! This will be shared amongst users with the same interests as you. Make sure you add keywords to ensure that other people see it. You’ll end up pinning a lot of photos on Pinterest because there are tonnes of things to see: inspiration for weddings, decorating your house, garden, painting, arts and crafts, etc. If you’re looking for inspiration, you’re bound to find it on Pinterest. You can use Pinterest as a business, too. Your main goals will probably be to find customers, digital marketing, or maybe as a Pinterest influencer. You can create a professional profile. To be successful on the site, you should post high-quality images. You should also think about SEO (search engine optimization) and ensuring your social sharing is in line with your business image. To convert a personal account into a professional one, you just need to head to your settings. You can start promoting your products on social media. It’s a great platform for startups doing artisanal products. Since Pinterest is quite different to other types of social networking, so are Pinterest users and the kind of things shared through the Pinterest app or website is quite different to other social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.
Logging Out or Quitting Pinterest
If you see wedding ideas when you close your eyes, it might be time to get off Pinterest. To do this, you just need to click on the three dots and select log out. That’s all there is to logging out of Pinterest. There are also plenty of reasons to quit Pinterest. Maybe you’re done with new trends. Maybe you’re missing Snapchat. Maybe you’re sick of social media. In any case, if you don’t want to use Pinterest any more, head to your account settings and click “Deactivate account”. There are two options:
- Deactivate your account so that you can reactivate it at any point.
- Delete your account so that it can never be reactivated.
With all the free time you’ll now have, you might want to create a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram profile. However, don’t forget that Twitter is a great way to find new ideas, keep up to date with fashion and trends, and find some awesome infographics. You can also use it for your content marketing. You should be ready to start pinning. Whether you want to learn about blogging and become a blogger, become a social media marketer on Facebook and Twitter with tonnes of followers, or create Pinterest boards that everyone's talking about as part of your social media strategy, you can search for tutors to help you on Superprof.
