About Pearl
My saxophone teaching philosophy is grounded in the conviction that each student is a unique artist with their own musical voice waiting to be discovered and developed. I place great emphasis on building a solid technical foundation—proper breath support, embouchure formation, posture, finger technique, articulation, and precise intonation are all fundamental components of healthy and expressive saxophone playing. However, technique serves as a gateway rather than a goal in itself. From the outset, I encourage students to engage with improvisation and creative expression, guiding them through scales, modes, and chord progressions, and helping them develop their ear through listening exercises and call-and-response activities. I integrate music theory into lessons naturally and contextually, connecting abstract concepts to the repertoire or improvisation the student is exploring, making the learning process more relevant and meaningful. I strive to offer a wide variety of repertoire across genres including jazz, blues, pop, and classical to ensure students stay motivated and inspired. Technology plays a crucial role in my teaching, as I use recording apps, metronomes, tuners, and backing tracks to enhance practice efficiency and self-evaluation. Goal-setting and personalized practice plans are central to my approach, ensuring students experience consistent progress without burnout. A particularly rewarding experience was helping a student overcome initial performance anxiety and evolve into a confident soloist, performing with their school ensemble. My ultimate aim is to nurture technically proficient, creative, and passionate saxophonists who are excited to continue their musical journeys for life.

My saxophone teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the balance between technical discipline and artistic freedom. I believe that mastering fundamentals such as breath control, embouchure stability, articulation, finger dexterity, and tone production is essential for long-term growth and musical versatility.
I integrate theory, ear training, and jazz harmony from the beginning to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the musical language and to prepare them for improvisation and ensemble playing. Each lesson is customized to fit the student’s individual goals and musical tastes—whether they want to master classic jazz standards, develop soulful ballad interpretations, or explore modern pop and fusion styles.
Improvisation is a key focus; I break it down into approachable steps like scale familiarity, melodic phrasing, rhythmic variation, and emotional expression to cultivate creativity and confidence. I use engaging tools such as play-along tracks, call-and-response exercises, and improvisation games to enhance listening skills and spontaneity. Technology plays a vital role, with students leveraging recording software, slow-down apps, and digital loopers to analyze their progress and experiment with layering ideas.
Performance preparation includes stage presence coaching, managing performance anxiety, and learning to communicate effectively with an audience. One of my most fulfilling teaching experiences was guiding a student with a classical background to embrace jazz improvisation, helping them break free from notation dependency and discover their own voice. I strive to create a supportive, motivating environment where students feel empowered to take risks and express their unique musical identities through the saxophone.
